My rules for lanesplitting:
Rule 1: Know my limits. Don't do it if you can't pass the cars 10km/h or more faster than them (you spend too much time next to them). At the same time, don't go more than about 30 km/h faster... you're looking to be merged with if you go faster than that.
Rule 2: Know my speed. Generally speaking, unless the drivers are being c*nts (e.g. 3 abreast down the freeway at 90 km/h across all lanes with traffic backed up behind them and no one overtaking anyone else) I don't split above 40-50 km/h. @ 50 km/h my stopping distance is around ~ 20m with my brakes covered and slow reaction time, or about 5 cars lengths.
Rule 3: Know my open spaces. If there's an open spot next to a car, they will move. Guaranteed. Even if it's a slower lane. It's like a freakin law. And most of the time, they'll be a bastard about it and stop across the line so you have to stop splitting. So be prepared to stop.
Rule 4: Know my width. Cagers hate it when you take off their mirrors. Especially when you do it unintentionally.
Rule 5: Know what's behind me. I consider it rude to stop the guy behind me splitting faster. I would pull into a space, let him pass, then follow him at a safe distance.
They're my rules, and the only time I was knocked off was when I broke them. My Dad splits under the same rules. They kept me safe after I learned my lesson.
May the splitting gods look after you and keep you shiny side up, and welcome to the two wheeled road.
