From memory, the oval pistons was an idea about getting more valve area for higher gas flow without increasing the cylinder count/capacity much.

It was a bit of a "hack" to get around rules (forget whether it was capacity or cylinder count), but yeah - didn't exactly work as well as planned.

As you can probably understand, I believe the oval pistons caused all sorts of interesting issues with regards to thermal expansion, etc.

btw... the NR oval pistons have little to do with the VFR... not sure why they were posted up, but...
