Sounds normalish for a GPX. If you keep a good eye on your tyre pressures I've heard of people getting 15000-20000 out of them. The stock set only lasted 8000 on my gpx but I wasn't careful with the tyre pressures.

I'm using Pirelli MT75s on my gpx at the moment. They're a rounded tyre which worked wonders for the kind of street riding and the odd track day that I used them for. They're probably not the best for commuting. I'd recommend having a chat to Peter at Tyres For Bikes if you're stuck on which tyres to get.
