2nd Hand Bike With Mediocre Service History

    Hey guys,
I'm looking into a 2nd hand bike that I found on gumtree. What worries me is that when I asked when his last service was they said it was 7,000km and 3 years ago.

I know motorbikes should have oil changed approximately 5,000km. It's the interval between the last service that I'm unsure about.

What type of things should I look for with the engine and if you were in this situation would you be considering the bike.

    Thanks for reading!

I could have sworn the gixxers had a 12k service interval, but regardless of what it actually is, as thatguy said, get an inspection. If you have niggling doubts, it's usually for a reason. If it's nothing, you have bought peace of mind for a rather low price, and if there is something wrong, you probably just saved yourself a heap of trouble/time/money.

If the oil was changed regularly and everything else checked out OK it wouldn't be of a concern to me.

Has it been sitting for a very long time?? If you can get it cheap

Probably needs empty oil/gas, remove oil filter, run it with new semi-synthetic oil for half an hour (warm it well) change again filter+oil to something good then you are fine. Coolant, brake fluid, brake pads, tires and chain may need changing too

If it hasnt been started in ages might need to remove spark plugs and put some oil down the wells to prevent scoring.

Not too sure about the oil, but from what he was saying it doesn't seem like it. Inspection does seem the way to go. I completely forgot that was an option!
    Thanks for the help.

3 years is way too long between oil changes regardless of km traveled. Oil starts deteriorating when opened and contaminated by being put in an engine. 12 months would be the max between services.

it WILL need a service before it is ridden anywhere regardless of an inspection, if it hasn't moved in 3 years (literally) there could be many things that need doing like new chain after it has seized or rusted on etc

I would check the oil and start it up.
A mechanic is going to have to do it to check things anyway, and your not going to pay to have it serviced when you dont know if you want it.
