Hi,
Off to BALI next week. I was wondering if anyone knew what sort of bike gear was available cheaply?

Ive been to Bali over 9 times now! they don't have bike gear as such! unless you want a scooter helmet with horns on it![]()

Heading over to bali myself in a couple of weeks, anyone have any recomendations on where to hire a bike / scooter ? And any cool spots to take it?
I've been a few times and usually hire a scooter to get around. I have to tell you that you will be picked on by Police, they sit and wait for us lot, appear from nowhere pull you over and then invent some offence, describe the fine which is in the millions of Indonesian dim dam currency then offer that "you pay me now 200,000" rather than go to court.
One week there saw me boost the local plod 5 times in 4 days! This was around Legian and near the airport.
Best way is to stand and talk utter rubbish for as long as you can and they get bored and leave or if you have a wallet with only say around 100,000 ... stating its all you've got and they go away.
As for rides out I've never ventured much further than the south of the island. My last attempt to head to the North East was plagued by the above mentioned plod who pissed me off so much I headed back to the bar.
some lucky people manage to avoid police altogether.
I will be going back and I will get around the island on my scooter trail. The challenge for me will be to avoid the plod .... avoid the plod tour. Nice ring to it.
Bike gear - buy a local cheap helmet .. around $30 rather than borrow one from the hire people. The scooters are around $5 a day which is fairly great value in my book. Petrol can be bought from local shops at the side of the road and is fairly cheap too.
Cheers
I never had a run in with the coppers, even when I accidently drove a rental car the wrong way down a one way street. It was in some town between Ubud and Denpesar and I made an awkward three point turn by reversing up what turned out to be the driveway of the local cop shop. A bunch of local coppers sitting were sitting on the verandah having smoko and they just pointed and laughed at me. I think they left me alone because I'd already given them enough entertainment.
As for gear, I'd just bring your own. Don't let an airline check your helmet either, a full face lid fits just fine in the overhead locker.
B - R - A - K fucking E
you can get disc locks for like $2... is that the kind of bike gear you're talking about?![]()
If you're renting a bike, this is what you'll get.
No gear whatsoever, bar a helmet if you ask.
You need no license or passport or anything. Perhaps an address or hotel name and a phone number.
"Insurance" is unofficial and usually around 500'000, if you want it.
Honda Vario (125cc auto), don't pay more than 40'000 a day.
Yamaha Mio (110cc auto), don't pay more than 40'000 a day.
Honda Tiger (GL200 - 200cc manual), don't pay more than 50'000 a day.
Yamaha Vixion (FZ150i - 150cc manual), don't pay more than 50'000 a day.
Get these prices down if for more than 2 or 3 weeks.
The Tiger is more upright and cruise-y, while the Vixion is smaller and more nimble. Both have about the same power and speed.
Ask if you can try it before you make an agreement - some are unserviced and feel terrible (bad clutch, bent wheels, broken starter, etc).
If you get stopped by police, have a 50'000 note ready (claim it's all you have on you).
Ask if you can 'pay the fine here' and if they say no because their boss is watching, push them more but be more discrete. If they're still not swayed, no more than 100'000. Kiss ass and stay polite
You can rent a Ninja 250r for about 600'000 a day (down to 300'000 if > a month), but those are harder to find.
Apparently the new Ducati dealer here will rent out Monsters, but unsure of price or requirements.
Wear a damn helmet. Have some fun.
My son went up to the north east coast to an area called Ahmed.
He said it was fantastic. There's a great wreck up there to snorkel or dive on!

Get an International Driver's Licence. It works out more expensive than bribing cops there, but a heap less stressful.
One owner. Only driven gently on Sundays. Sold to best offer. First to see will buy. Reward offered for safe return. Coming soon to a cinema near you. Available for a limited time only.
My waterbed broke this morning. Oh, I don't have a waterbed. Bugger.
I have had a nice set of dress/riding leathers made up for going out in and they're very nice, there's nothing like tailor made clothes for a good fit. However it does not have body armour, extra thickness at the joints or any other of the safety features you would associate with Motorcycle gear. On the plus side you can ask them to make it a little bigger (which I did with the second jacket I bought from Bali) and fit some MotoX body armour underneath it.
The Leather Pants I bought with the jacket are certainly better than Denim/Moleskin jeans but not up to the standard of Draggin Jeans or Branded Motorcycle leathers.
You can buy proper helmets in Bali but I never checked the price and they will not be legal in WA, but then from what I have read in Two Wheels about current Helmet laws, no helmet is legal in WA due to Ministerial incompetence.

Hey guys, I'm in Bali at the moment! There is no gear just cheap crappy helmets that are more laughing stock than decent... Hardly think they'd pass our Aus standards. There's no jackets etc - mostly because there bikes aren't over 150cc so not needed - I've been keeping an eye out myself.
It terms if scootering - tge streets here are bad, worse than I ever remember in my 3 trips. Took us an hour to drive 10kms!!! We've chosen to taxi it, it's basically less than $5 a trip everywhere.
Something really cool we did though was a quad bike ride in the jungle yesterday... There was a tropical thunderstorm so it was like riding through very rocky confined streams.... Awsome fun, very crazy!
Good luck, oh and good timing our Aus dollar is stronger than American dollar!
" It is better to die standing than to live on your knee's."
You can get "real" full-face helmets, they'll cost between 400'000 and 2m.
They're not coming close to Aus standards, but they're a world away from those crappy bowls with horns.
Lats is right about the traffic, around the built-up areas (Kuta, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Jimbaran, Denpasar) it's awful. But a little north and it gets real nice.
My opinion is that riding in Bali is for the young and stupid. Most Aussies riding there are wrapped up in boardies only, either riding on roads for the first time or are loaded up with mates drinking gawd-awful piss, dodging maniac taxi drivers.
If you place any significant value your body parts, stick to cabs. There is a slightly better chance of avoiding a hospital/morgue. The roads are so crappy you really won't get any 'buzz' from riding. Doing 10-50kms/hr over potholes and squeezing between cars can't be stiffy-making!!
Anyway....you'll still do it. So enjoy and good luck.

Thanks for all the feedback. I won't bother investing any time shopping for motorcycle gear.
It's too late to get an international drivers license but will keep in mind for next time.
Great info on hire rates and the quad bike rides sound awesome.
I used to iinovate. Now ilitigate.

Only been once and rented a 185 for the week. Was chased by the police one night going the wrong way up a one way street in the middle of Kuta but they couldnt run fast enough and whistles dont stop me. Was very exciting dodging traffic with all the noise and colour, felt like James Bond. Very irresponsible and a lot younger.

Hire a Harley with a tour guide it's great fun! The guide will take to all the best riding roads out of the built up areas. I think we paid about 1.5-2 million each for a harley and a guide for the day. You will need an full/international license and I would bring your own helmet from Aus.
