if the bike is available on the local market then it is a no go zone..
DOTARS will not issue an import approval which it is reccommended you get b4 you ship the bike from its origin country

the only way around it is to import for race use only but this means you must show race history & also it will never be licenceable for roas use

why would you want to buy a japanese bike from china? just out of curiousity... price maybe? good luck registering it, you may find it more trouble that it's worth. A mate imported one from japan and had to pay for a few mods done to get it over the pitts... just bear in mind you may spend the difference on engine work to qualify for the compliance plate...

ADR is a major hassle, though it can be done. However It's a very tricky situation. Usually if you're purchasing the vehicle you can't import it, you have to go through a 3rd party importer. If however you owned the vehicle in another country then you can bring it in as a personal import.

It rarely if ever works out cheaper unless you're after something very rare.
Australia has some of the lowest prices in the world for bikes.

Cheers...

Well I have finally got my permit for my vintage Ducati from DOTARS.
The hassels was more to do with them not receiving the full paperwork that I sent multiple times and dealing with someone different every time than anything else. Talk about bloody frustration....... an annoyed email pointing this out and telling them to ring me to sort it solved the problem Tim was very nice and sorted it all for me too for Tim.....
On the paperwork if the bike is older than an 80 something there was no questions about licensing and you skipped half the questions.
Wonder if DPI will pass her over the pits with no front brake, indicators etc. etc.???

5k sounds a bit suss. Not saying don't do it but I'd like to look at something before I buy it. That maybe what you think you're getting but that isn't necessarily what'll get shipped.

I just shipped me track bike from Canada. Shipping it was the cheap part. I paid $2200 in local charges to get it. Port fees, AQIS inspection, trucking, tax, it all adds up VERY quick! Actually, i'm sitting on my couch waiting for the truck right now. For $5000, take the money you are saving and go supervise it being loaded and sealed into your container.

DOTARS is another issue. If it is available in Aus and you want to put it on the road here, they will deny your permit in a New York munite. It protects Honda Australia's right to fuck you over and charge 30% more than in America! I had to jump through hoops to get a bike I already owned and isnt roadgoing into the country.

I'd suggest contact Ric at motomax (92588299) or another importer to see how they go about licensing bikes.

you say $5,000 landed. What are you counting in that price? Just purchase and shipping? What about the costs with bringing the bike into compliance with the Australian Design Rules (ADR's)??? That is often a large expense itself.

It sounds good, but i'm just saying make sure you sort everything out BEFORE you commit to the deal. You need to know exactly what its going to cost to get the bike on the road here.
