    Buying a Gixxer

I've had a look at a few late 90's gixxers as a commuter. All seem pretty sweet, can anyone think of any particular faults to keep an eye out for? had a look at few 600's, found a 750 i don't mind, and open to the litre bike. Any help would be appreciated, i've pretty only had Hondas, not too cluey with Suzuki's, and couldnt find a good reference site.

why get a late 90s suzuki when you can buy a 2008 with only four thousand seven hundred ks on it, and all the riding gear you will ever need (all new) for $9000 ..........have a look in the for sale section under the heading GSX 650F for sale , you wont have to check anything as its all as close to new as you can get ! i have plenty of photos i can send you

You also have to ask any sellers if they do sick wheelies and then tell them about your mate with a sick bike who did something awesome.

Ie. " yeah my mate has a Suzuki ZX 1450 R1. He does fully sick wheelies aye. did you hear about that guy that did a wheelie between 2 cop cars and then hit 300 on Beaufort st in peak hr? Yeah thats my mate...... will this bike do that?

Also you have to ask " whats the fastest you have ever done on it?"

Followed by "Yeah my mate did (insert numerical value) more than that"...etc etc.

"Me uncles brothers mothers mate had this sick bike that did <insert numeric value>"

"Whereabouts was that mate, I never saw that?"

"Oh yeah, but he sold it and doesn't have it anymore"

Because you can get a late nineties model for half that, maybe?

My 96 SRAD 750 is an awesome bike to ride. It's now getting turned back into a fighter style thing after a little rough kissing between headlight and the road, but they are a strong motor, great suspension and handling, comfortable bike, a lot of fun to ride and a pretty decent commuter too. A bonus - they're cheap now.

As with any bike, I'd check the fork seals, free play in the headstem and swingarm, brakes, what kind of smoke (fuel or oil) it blows when you idle it up to temperature from cold and rap the throttle a couple times, and take it for a ride to make sure that it handles evenly and smoothly.

I have one too. A real gem for the money if you can find a good one.

    Ditto mine!

What I meant was in good mechanical order - ie. no warped discs, blown fork seals, etc.

But with any used bike, generally it is best to look for one in the best possible condition.

To give you an idea, Rhinosaur - I picked up my 750 for $5000 about a year ago (mebbe 18 months, I dun remember) including all the standard kit plus about $1200 worth of stunting stuff (cage, MX bars, new triple clamp, sprockets, chains, 12 bar, blah blah blah).

Mine's now reaching the point where stuff that wears out, eg clutch cable clevis, some of the connectors, fairing bits and pieces etc are starting to need replacing but it's all pretty minor and I'm not exactly gentle and loving with the bike.

Apart from that? Nah - take it for a ride, make sure it's smooth, that it stops and starts, and doesn't blow too much smoke. Then buy it and have some fun.

Captain makes a good point. Just TELL her what you're doing (after you've done it). They get over it sooner or later Easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.
