Camera's in Vans/Xtrails. Forward facing or rearward facing aswell?

    Hi All,

Out of curiosity, the cameras that are mounted in the white vans / xtrails that seem to be popping up more and more often, are they able to get rear facing shots of bikes or just front facing?
Reason im asking is i rode past one last weekend (was not speeding so not stressed either way), and spotted it with enough time to get a pretty decent look at the camera in the back, and it seems as though it can only get front on shots, but i would have thought that given they are fairly new in WA they would be made so that they could also get rear shots?

The vehicle was facing the direction i was traveling on the freeway, and the camera apeared to be mounted so it was facing out the back window of the Xtrail.

    Cheers

I believe these cameras can monitor 4 lanes, so if it is sitting on a four-lane road, with two lanes each way i think it gets both sides of the road.

The cameras can only ever face one direction at a time but can moitor traffic travelling in both directions.

There is no speed camera in perth that will photograph a car/bike from both the from the front and the rear in one pass.

    Well that is logical.

So on the freeway, if the car was facing the direction of travel, then it would only be getting front on shots out the rear of the Xtrail/Van? however if it was on a multilane, multi direction road, then it would be getting vehicles that are traveling in the nearest lanes front on, and in the furthest lanes, from behind?

The new cameras have the ability to be slaved together and have them facing both ways taking pics from both front and back. There was a footage in the news showing them set up this way on Riverside drive.

big brother is so sneaky, its getting bad. there is a time and a place for everything, most riders assess the situation before pouring on some and it`s no drama as far as i`m concerned. but if a sneaky camera snaps you in that "blat", your f@*k`d.

    oh f**k

that honda crv under the bridge.. i thought was a broken down pos... very unlike them to use anything more than 2 - 3 years old.

in newsflash was posted up as a speed camera... i think i will get done for that... i approached it at 82.. and sped up a short distance before the 100 sign.

I've seen them set up like this in Midland also...near the Polytech campus.

Was told of one recently parked in a parking bay outside some shops.
(Where the six cars are parked nose to tail)

Bedford, Western Australia - Google Maps

Would just look like any other car parked at the shops.

If we have to display numberplates, for ease of recognition of our vehicles, then i believe speed cameras/cars should be forced to use marked vehicles, making it obvious that you are approaching or have passed a speed camera. Fair is fair. On this particular occasion both cameras i passed on the freeway had failed to put up the "you have just passed" a speed camera signs, which i belieive is against the law?

Don't forget that radar/laser detectors are legal in WA. A worthwhile investment....

Also, if you do get pinged from the rear, it doesn't necessarily mean that you were the one driving....

Nope, it was a friendly notice put out by the Police, a practice they phased out a few years ago. Now no camera's have signs with them.

Pretty sure a new statute was passed not to long ago, something about onus of proof, and it said that the owner of the vehicle will be pinged with the fine, unless they state who was actually driving...i could be wrong, seeing as this goes against the golden rule of criminal law that you are innocent, and must be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt... ill ooh into it

Also i was driving along and there was a white van, didn't get a look it because it was dark, but was 99% sure it was a camera. I would have easily slowed down by the time i passed it. My question is, do rear facing cameras (the ones that can get us) measure our speed as we approach and simply take a photo from behind, or do they measure the speed going away, and take a photo. Also the van had its side windows filled in, so guessing it can't have been a rear facing camera??

    Cheers

Has anyone seen the vans that drive with you? I've seen a couple of camera vans pull out in front of me and stick at my speed while I was heading to work.

*EDIT*: They may have just been changing location as I got there though, not sure.

as far as Im aware, fixed speed cameras have to have notification, mobile cameras do not.... read that on the wapo site during the phasing in of the new fixed camera.

the loophole is that for the fixed ones, location and distance of notification from said camera is not specified, hence why there is a sign at leederville despite the karrinyup camera is 6 odd km away ( they still had to put signs up at every entrance after leederville though.)
