    Cant shift to 6th gear

    Hi All,

I recently acquired a 2007 ZZR250 and like a doofus did not do my homework well enough to know its a 6 speed and not a five. The problem I am having with this puppy is I can't shift it to the 6th gear. I just wanted to know if it's going to be an expensive repair and some of the possible causes this could happen .

I'm assuming it was a private sale? What exactly happens when you try and change into 6th? Does it clunk/grind/do nothing? What speed are you trying to change up at? Have you tried a clutchless change into 6th?
I don't know specifically what would cause your problem, but I'm guessing it is something to do with a selector arm gone bad in the gearbox. If whatever is wrong requires your gearbox to be split, it won't be overly cheap I think.

*the above post is random speculation, and should not be confused with informed knowledge.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon! Press the brake foot as you roll around the corners, and save the collapse and tie up.

This could be taken as an insulting comment but keep in mind of hundreds of learners I've ridden with and instructed at least 20 have done it, the box is 1 down 5 up and if you only count upshifts or downshifts there's 5 shifts and some new riders have counted that off as a 5 speed.

It's likely I'm wrong so I'll apologise in advance if you feel I'm questioning your intelligence, but if I'm right you may feel a little dopey for a moment but that will pass a lot quicker than if you paid to be embarrassed by a mechanic

If it's mechanical I hope it's nothing major or expensive.

Filbert: it's cool mate, I can only do one down and 4 up. Ps no offense taken.

I have not tried shifting without the clutch will go home and try it today.

I will be taking it to the mechanic on sat so that he can have a proper look at it, as the 1st gear is pretty rough to use, I even stalled the bike after pulling the clutch fully in and then engaging the first gear. The clunking is pretty lound for the first two gears after that it's pretty smooth.

Filbert if it's one down and five up, shouldn't you have six downs to the first gear.

I hate to ask but did you test ride it before paying for it?
Your gear box does not seem too good if it is that clunky.

What RPM is it sitting in at top gear at 100kmh?

Did you have the sidestand down when you engaged first?

First and second gear are usually a little bit noisey.

Bad news is it's mechanical The good news is my comment was taken as intended

And we see how easily someone can lose count, expecting 6 downshifts to 1st from 6th is exactly what caught these learners out, I had one complain on his first ride that he could only use 4 of the 5 gears after he took off, he literally facepalmed once I explained it and was a very embarrassed learner, if they did the same thing after a few hours on the bike or did it twice I might question intelligence but it's common enough for new riders or riding a new bike, I just consider it a blonde moment and part of the experience

Pretty unlikely to lose 6th gear.
Any chance the engine is from an earlier ZZR/GPX?

so what ended up being the problem? at least you didn't pay someone to be embarrassed

we all have to start somewhere and that usually involves a few silly mistakes, but once learned you never forget.
