    Compensation for damaged stolen bike

Hi guys - I've recently had a stroke of luck! The police found my xr400 motard in a drug raid somewhere in perth (btw the scumbags who where found with it didn;t necessarily steal it, that's still to be finalised). Awesome stuff! stoked! She's copped a bit of damage though - been thrashed, dropped, sprayed black etc etc. Anyone know whether there's any way of getting compensated for the damage? this idiot didn't get around to insuring it before it was stolen.

anyone had any experience with this?

    any info much appreciated!

Your compensation is that you learnt to insure things AND you got your bike back.
    Lucky hey!

You could spend a few grand upfront in lawyer fees to be rapaid at $5 a week via their centrelink payments...

Or learn to insure your shit.
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

Unless Police can link them back to the burglary they'll probably get charged with receiving stolen goods rather than the theft, which is likely to complicate any civil claim that you make ... (ie did the person stealing the bike do the damage before they sold it to the drug dealers) you can also talk to Police about seeking a restitution order when they charge him, although I'd say it's gonna be unlikely.
I'd be weighing up the options on whether it's worthwhile going the next steps. You could be forking out Court filing fees and get nothing in return, even if you win the druggies are unlikely to have any assets in their name, a bunch of fines to pay and maybe some jail time...meaning no income.

Unless the petrol tank is stuffed with coke, you dont have much of a chance of getting anything back

Keep across it with the cops to see if they ever catch up with the actual thief
Being someone who has had a bike in my name stolen, the detectives involved told me to gather up all my out of pocket expenses and have them ready for when the dude goes to court and there will be access to victims of crime compensation or something like that, so at least ask the cops about it

Unfortunately, in my case, he went back across the Tasman before that day in court was had, so all I have for enjoyment is the knowledge that he broke his leg on the tree that he hit

Being that they are receiving stolen goods and being done in a drug raid do you really want to risk pissing them off? Sucks I know but your much less likely to have repeat trouble if they don't know who you are.

Damn this is what our society has brought us to. We are so scared of reprisals that we don't even want to follow up with legitimate courses of action.

not reprisals, more less the fact that you cant get blood from a stone.
