Do dealers like you testing their bikes?

Specifically, if you're an R-E testing an R bike. Because you can legally, right? Provided you put up plates and have a shadow. And do they like riders in general testing their bikes? I would assume so, having to make sales and all.

Maybe that can be the next PSB group event: Bike Testing Days

Every test ride I have ever done required me to have the correct class of license to ride the bike. No shadowing learners on shop bikes

Fair enough. Don't you have to pay a bond or some such in case you stack the bike?

Not that I ever have found. Hand over your license, sign the paper saying if you crash you pay and off you go.

Some shops will shadow you, you just have to go in and ask, if they have someone spare that can do it they will, but best to go talk to them first if you can't take someone with you

I just bought my R1 from brittons and i am only r-e licenced, we talked about price and the trade in, and then one of the boys shadowed me round the block. I think if any bike shop knows you are serious and are not just a tyre kicker they would let you ride whatever, obviously you dont ride like a tool and bin their bike. Respect what they are doing for you and it wont ruin it for future buyers.

I think you hit the nail there. If you're serious, they probably will let you ride a big bike on R-E. Last thing they need is R-E riders test riding 1000's every weekend.

For sure, without a doubt they would get people wanting to have a test ride all the time, they would'nt be able to keep up with updating new k's put on the bikes.

Just looked at the new R1 at Causeway Yamaha and they offered to take me out on it even though I have just my R-E at the moment. They would shadow me but didn't see a problem after I put $250 deposit to sign up for one. I declined and have signed up for one at 5 star

It's a pity that Causeway didn't show the same enthusiasm the weekend before when no-one would serve us as I would have ordered it from them - didn't cause I didn't trust the level of service after that experience.

Sounds like Causeways havnt changed. I ended up at 5 Star spending my money there. I spose being in Vic Park, you would get all sorts wasting time. Its the quality of the sales staff that they employ, they cant pick a tyre kicker and let a genuine sale walk out the door.

Serial test riders probably not welcome..sure try a few to make up your mind to purchase, but people who book several bikes on demo days ranging from scooters to tourers and no intention of buying are just taking up the time of possible purchasers riding a bike...do your research first, then try em...I'll take out an RE/shadow as long as you are confident...would you lend out your 30k superbike to anyone for a spin???

This thing about not having a demo is bullshit. When I was in the car game, if you didn't have a demo of a particular model, you strapped on a set of dealer plates and off you went.

How much insurance excess do you have to pay if you stack the demo bike? 3K?

Bullshit. It's not up to the individual shops if they have a demo or not. They get them given to them specifically as demos. Maybe the 'bike game' is different to the 'car game' huh? Yeah, didn't think of that.

Don't get ants in you pants Sairz.

Cars, bikes, trailers whatever. They all operate as MTA dealers and subsequently are entitled to own and use dealer plates within the operating hours of the business for the puposes of demonstrating, moving or testing an as yet unlicenced vehicle.

So my point is that if I'm considering spending 20 grand at their dealership, in the absence of a demo, I should be able to point out any bike in the shop and say "I want to ride THAT one"

Having worked in the car game and the bike industry the demo scenario is different.

How many 2008 busa demo's were there when they were released?
I know that WA Big Bike learners are different to other states and this is why if you need finance for a big bike Yamaha Finance now have a policy that they will not fund you until you have the full big bike license. I know this is a little off the subject but if i was offering a ride on a new r1 i would be qualifying your riding experience. ie got my 250 license Monday and applied for big license permit tuesday lets go test riding and r1? Not too wise a decison for all parties concerned.

Do your homework and ride a bike that will suit your needs. Most would have no problem allowing you to test the bike but when you find out the insurance premium after the test ride its very easy to say no thanks.

    Happy test riding.

I wasn't allowed to test ride my ZX6 when i brought it as it was the last one in the shop and was not even road ready. Battery wasn't hooked up etc.

I could have test ridden the newer model in the shop but not the same bike so no point.

Some bike shops will let you bring a shadow too or will shadow you if they have someone available. Just have to ring and talk to them before heading in so you are prepared.
