    Do I need a new helmet?#345

So long story short, i was carrying my helmet when i tripped and it dropped and skidded across the floor.

Its a year old Shoei XR1000

Theres no marks, just a scratch on the rear vent switch, but it made a solid THUD when it hit the floor.

Should I get a new one?

Meh, give it a good checking over and feel the inside of the shell aswell.

Iv seen people with a lot worse off helmets than what yours sounds like and they continue to wear them.

You must also ask yourself, how much do you want a new shiny helmet.

Believe it or not the shell's primary purpose is to hold the foam together, it also stops objects penetrating the foam in a crash, the foam will generally only be damaged by an impact with weight in the helmet. If you feel that the shell is structurally sound it's probably fine, keeping in mind that standards testing generally allows for a primary and secondary impact eg, landing on your head then sliding into something, so they can take a bit of punishment. If your head was in it my answer would be completely different, if it takes a bump even a light one then it's done it's job and you should get a new one.

I have seen a video on youtube from Shoei explaining helmet tech where the Shoei rep said the exact same thing. If the shell isn't badly damaged or cracked then it will be fine.

They are designed to keep your head intact in the event of a possibly serious accident, where the impact it experiences is a LOT harder than dropping it from thigh height.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

My brother got a small scuff on his from a lowside (about the size of a 5c piece) and was actually told by a scrutineer that it would be fine and just to put a sticker on it so that it wouldn't get picked up by other scrutineers next time
