Don't hate me for this. Need info on a good scooter brand 50cc

    Hello all,

I am looking to buy my nephew a 50cc scooter as he has just got a mechanical apprenticeship and needs to travel from Two Rocks to Joondalup. I want to buy him a good quality scooter if such a thing exists. I am sure some of you out there have teen age kids who know what is the best brand and the coolest model.

Any constructive info would be great.

    Cheers

My dauighter had a Metro 4 which had brilliant brakes (I mean amazing) but was pretty gutless & whiney. My son had a couple of TGB's. Great pull away power but still only made it to a little over 60kmh (not tricked in anyway). The only problem we had with the TGB's was the battery. If you rode the bike3 or 4 days a week, it worked like a dream. If you left it for a week or two without riding, the battery seemed to go flat. Easily solved by getting a cheap battery charger and wiring an external connector so you didn't have to unscrew everything to get to the battery. I'm sure there are probably better mopeds out there but the TGB cost me $900 second hand and I sold it after a year for $950-. It was used probably for 200 of the 365 days & maybe added several thousand kms to the odo which was already at 8000 when we bought it. Two Rocks to Joondalup will take him a while on a moped. If he's 17, go a 125 or a 250 instead.

Finding good a 50cc 2 stroke scooters is exceptionally difficult, There are better things than getting your nephew a slow moving traffic liability with a buzzy engine of relatively short lifespans.

Most of them should probably be banned as many when would fail ADR standards with there appalling emissions and build quality from what I have seen and ridden.

    Try a 125+ 4 stroke.

Edit: Had a student with a $4000ish retro styled Vespa 50cc, thought it should have been faster and not scraped bits while cornering.

As for Aprilia SR50 I never noticed it to be that much quicker, although the quality is definitely there over most other brands

During my scooter test rider days!

Aprilia were the best by far, and we practically fought over them when they needed to get ridden.

I think it was particularly the sr 50

I road a lot of scooters for that job but that was the favorite
    Fuck this, lets ride

How old is he? (can he get his licence or is he restricted to 50 cc?) for 50 cc the Aprilia SR Ditec and there is a ignition mod you can do to de restrict it. Purely as that far will require roads that have higher speed limits than 60kph and on a restricted scooter I think you have a pretty high chance of getting run over. As Deej said Piaggo/Vespa/Gilera the original scooter makers still turn out a better product better brakes suspension lights. Ran a Gilera 125 (four stroke) to from work for a number of years clocked up around 26 000kms and needed nothing other than tyres servicing and a belt. It was capable of mixing it up on the freeway but it was it's limit so I'd only do it for a few kms at a time.

Peugeot turn out a fairly nice product too but I haven't had much direct experience, 125 compressor!

strongly advise against the Honda Today 50 or for that matter any 4-stroke in the 50cc category. they just don't have enough power. the today 50 in particular couldn't pull the skin off cold milk.

i think Peugeot stopped bringing scooters into Australia, didn't they? Such a pity as they were very good, but probably too expensive for the OZ market.

For all round package, anything made by Piaggio is leaps and bounds ahead of the other manufacturers.

Go check out Ace Scooters in Joondalup. Good people.

Look at the Piaggio Typhoon 50, if Ace have any in stock.

Bro had an adly cougar. Chinese. But heaps of them around.

Power pipe, restrictor removed, and he ported the barrel when he re ringed it.

That thing done 16000kms, running lean on oil to get some extra oomph.

Did a genuine 88kph as certified by the nice police officer on wanneroo road, and in reality, we know it had topped that before.

Even before being ported, it could pull 80kph.

I rode a 50cc TGB 2 stroke scooter for 3 years before getting a 250cc motorbike. With de-restriction (cutting 1 wire) it could pull 70km/h. It did 22 thou km's before I sold it on for about $900.

It only broke down a few times when it developed a bad earth in it's 3rd year!! So the engines can last with regular servicing, like most things.

Of the cheaper scooters, TGB, Bug, or Bolwell are quite good. All Taiwenese, so much better quality than the chinese Vmoto's. Scootamoto in Osborne Park are good to deal with.

If you have more $$ get a Piaggio from Ace Scooters in Joondalup.
All generalisations are false... including this one!

Just in case anyone is wondering, the young fella is only 16 and he can't drive the car he has in the shed yet (too young), so it was a way of getting another sensible young bloke into the world of bikes one step at a time and getting him away from the very inefficient public transport system..

Means nothing, I have called licencing three times with the same question and gotten 3 different answers.
