yes/no, depending on the angle it's mounted at.

Yeah say roadside portable cameras not fixed

i think he means the angle the plate is mounted at, not the angle of the camera.

Bend it up and no, just mount it flat, yes.
Our Father, Who art at Phillip Island, Hallowed be thy name
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done
In the backroads as it is on the freeway
Give us this day our high-octane premium fuel
And forgive us our lanesplitting
As we forgive the four wheel drives, the volvos and the taxis
And lead us not into gravel corners
But deliver us from hand-held radars
For thine is thy leather, thy denim, thy Gore-Tex and thy Kevlar

Saw a good one a green Ninja on the freeway a few times, where the plate sits between twin undertail pipes - perfectly visible from behind, but I'm betting perfectly obscured from a 20 degree angle.
Also - is that Suzuki plate legal?
No it's not, and neither are the pipes I should imagine.
I bet they still sound loud and horrible.

Surely the distance from the camera to the rear of the vehicle also plays a part as well as the height of the lens from the ground.
I think that M109 plate would still be visible from 20 degrees depending on the distance. The further away from the lens the more is visible.
Those vertically mounted plates - I have seen then on quite a few cruisers now. Was considering for mine - but won't if they are illegal.
Dave M109R as much as i really do admire your think outside the square solution there i think you'll eventually get done for a partially obstructed plate, also i cant see a light? that would be just a "giv me" for them and give them the excuse to pull you over mate, they don't need much these days
I cant help it if my reality doesnt match your perceptions
I just did a bit of googling and it seems the angles of mobile speed cameras are variable but usually about 45 degrees to the road.
Light is mounted under the rear end for the invisible look... seems to have worked.
Desmo i like you....so honest
Plate is technically legal, have already been to the rta and asked.
Apparently W.A is the only state left that does not have the 45 degree rule for number plates, it must only be visible from the rear and must me mounted in an "upright" position.
Not being a smartarse (had enough shit from doing that) but i do carry a print out of the regulation and have shown it to two traffic officers and been let off with a "i did not know that".
ROAD TRAFFIC (LICENSING) REGULATIONS 1975 - REG 25
25 . Number plate to be fixed on vehicle
(1) A responsible person for, or a person in charge of, a vehicle shall rigidly fix and keep the identification tablet or number plates of the vehicle thereon so that —
(a) in the case of a motor cycle or a trailer or jinker as defined in the Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Regulations 2002 , the identification tablet or number plate is fixed and kept in a conspicuous place on the back of the vehicle, in an upright position and so that the characters thereon are clearly visible and legible, by day and by night;
For more information you can get it here ROAD TRAFFIC (LICENSING) REGULATIONS 1975 - REG 25
The technical part is that i define "upright" as like how we walk but i'm sure to get in the shit one with a Officer having a bad day.

If I was a traffic copper the phrase in the legislation I'd be zooming in on is 'conspicuous on the back of the vehicle', because it's not on the back, and from the left it isn't conspicuous at all.
