    FZ1 to FZ6

Thinking of trading the FZ1 on an new FZ6. I think the numbers are pretty close to a straight swap. FZ6 is $10k on the road.

Have not ridden an FZ6, but see plenty on the commute to work.

    Why am I considering this?
    • 100% of my riding is commuting
    • FZ1 fuel economy is 6.5 l/100 km
    • has done 28,000km is coming up to 4 years old
    • while it is in A1 condition it is getting older
    • replacing it with another FZ1 without considering options is folly
    • Really like the power of the FZ1, am concerned I might miss it (but don't really "need" it for the 64 km daily commute)
I know the FZ6 is down the scale in terms of suspension but my research is that it is more comfy, far more fuel efficient, easier on tyres (depending on how it is ridden). I don't ride the bike hard, tho there are no chicken strips on the tyres.

The FZ1 is well optioned (PCIII, Akra can, map, reusable air filter and speedo healer). Hence it has a bit more go in the lower end of the revs (tuned that way) which is good for getting outa there in traffic.

In the end I'll do what I want anyway, but thought I'd chuck it out there for an option I hadn't considered.

Ive just traded in my Thunderace on a 2007 FZ1
And Im loving it so far! mine also has a PC3, Yoshi full system, filter etc...
3rd and 4th gear wheelies are awesome so my vote would go to keeping the FZ1.

Surely fuel consumption on a bike cant be a reason to sell it.
But then again i dont give a fuck about fuel consumption not even when driving my car.
Maybe a moped would be better for work and the r1 for the weekend

perhaps you might like to swap bikes for a week or so? Mine is pretty much as bombed as you would want an fz6.

    Economy is much better?

The R6 we have here gets way worse than my honda 600RR, which clocks about 5.5L/100km if ridden nicely (real world figures, not spec sheet).

So i would hazard a guess that an FZ6 (detuned R6 motor, no?) will be about the same as your FZ1 economy wise (if its anything like the R6).... but again... its largely down to how you ride it....

HOWEVER... assuming it gets 5L/100km (lets be generous for a second for the sake of argument). You're saving about $3/100km.

How many kays you do per year? 20,000? if so, you've saved what... 600 bucks/yr? If you don't do that many... savings will be less. And don't forget you'll pay about 250 bucks in transfer fees....

Not worth rooting around with..... other reasons, fine... economy... meh... looking at the numbers, and going to a more gutless bike... its so not worth it. Just turn wrist less.

Valuation Prices for FZ1N 2006 - Red Book - Good Luck with a straight swap with a dealer.

You will probably need to kick in a couple of grand (money not extras) for the dealers trouble.
    Private Prices$8,600 - $10,300Trade In Prices$6,300 - $7,500

If you want an economical bike to ride to and from work each day instead of the FZ1 then look into ER6 or GSX650F. Both will do better than 5l per 100kms when just commuting, cumfy to ride as they don't have the leaned over thing happening and are still able to keep you fairly interested when the going get a little faster

I haven't owned a FZ6 but did test ride one back to back with a FZ1 a while back. IMO the 6 is no good for commuting as it needs revs to go compared to the FZ1 (or ER6/GSX650F for that matter) which makes it harder work in traffic IMO

As thro said the $$$$ saving when thinking economy only may not be worth the cost/energy to change over, but maybe when you look at all outgoings it could be (insurance, tyres, service, fuel, consumables etc etc) so do the sums.

I doubt very much (actually I don't recon you'd get close) you'll get a straight swap for the bikes so make sure it is what you want to do.

IMO keep the FZ1, it's yours and it's going strong.

    Re: FZ1 to FZ6

Me thinks need to adjust riding style if concerned with fuel, my zx12r used to get below 5L if you took it nicely

Another way to get better fuel is smaller rear sprocket, especially with a thou

As my daily commute I get 250 - 300km's out of a tank sometimes hitting reserve before paying about $12-15 to fill up using premium. Shes pretty damn economical..

Get a big V-Twin much more economical than an inline 4!
    I think I get about 9L/100km commuting.

I dont think you should do it either. But my advice would be to take an FZ6 for an extended ride similar to how you commute and see how it affects your riding style! Then try and adjust your riding on the FZ1 and see what you get (like Falcore suggested).

^ i seriously reckon you may well get worse economy on the 6.

    why?

you'll be flogging the shit out of it everywhere through the gears, whereas the thou will be more happy to lug a higher gear.

sure, spec sheet the 6 might be able to get better economy, but in reality i reckon there will be very little in it (unless you're exceptionally capable at riding the litre pretty hard).

of course tyres cost money.... but i guess it comes down to whether or not you want to save a few hundred bucks a year but lose a shitload of torque to do it...

the 6 also has a 19.5lt tank, but with PCV, auto tune, straight through exhaust my economy figures wouldnt be what you want to see.
