What you all think about these two bikes?
    They both handle beautifully.
Nice torque from the SV1000 and can get pipes with a nice v-twin rumble, the FZ1 is more high-strung go-faster-go-faster.

I've read in other topics about fuel economy, and the v-twin has only a 17 litre tank?

Owners of these bikes, how far do you get on a tank?
What do you think of these bikes overall?

My first tank while running the bike in and keeping revs below 4-6 grand I only got 150 k's...

But this was to be expected i suppose cos the engine is so tight.

The bike has now done 1400km's and has had 3 oil changes (200, 500 and 1000km).

I am currently getting about 200-220 km before the reserve light comes on (18 liter tank) and I put 14 litres in it to fill.

As far as the bike goes, it is fantastic except for a few things.

It seriously lacks bottom end and I find this particularly frustrating coming off a CB1300 with that monster torque.

The fuel injection is utter garbage and I have never in my life ridden a bike with fuel injection that is so scary.

When getting stuck into a few corners......coming in at about 7-9 grand, you close the throttle and the fuel is cut completely....when you try to wind the throttle back on again, no matter how gently FUCKING BANG..it comes on with a huge hit and really unsettles the bike.

This is a well known problem and has been written about by every journo that has tested it and every forum about the fz1.

If you can get around this problem (I will be fitting a pcIII and getting it dynoed....but have been told on the american forums that this doesn't really solve the problem) it is a great bike.

Fantastic round town, great to throw around, great on a country run with a comfy ride position and good wind protection.

Do yourself a favour and go see either highway yamaha in midland, or even better, 5 star yamaha down south and take the demo out for a spin.

They let me have it for two days (don't ask about the naked guy at scarbs) and you cant get better service than that.

I really want to throw a leg over the new FZ1, all I can offer is that there was a comparo between the two in some magazine somewhere and the yammi won quite convincingly. It is a newer model with newer technology in it.

Im very happy with the SVthou, its powerful enough to scare me but is very happy to lounge around at the speed limit. Very predictable, doesnt feel like it wants you to go fast all the time but is willing and able when needed.

The brakes are the worst thing I reckon, 2 potters and not enough power or feel, Im getting braided lines. The suspension is fairly budget but I cant say I have a prob with it. And wind at freeway speeds sometimes make me feel like im riding a naked, despite the fairing it can get blowy. I get around 230km to a tank but Im not thrashing it, cant remember how big the tank is..?

I test-rode the fz1 again, this time the S model (faired) and I've decided it's not for me.
Lacks torque at the bottom, which is more important to me than massive horses up top.
Dale Britton made me sad, he told me that the SV1000 resale isn't very good and I'm better off getting a Z1000 or a sportsbike

I think I'm going to get an SV1000 anyway, as long as they'll trade my bike at a decent price.
If they won't give me the price I want for my Aprilia, I'll just keep it.

I had a look at this issue as well and from what I can tell, they actually have held their value pretty well. The S holds value a bit better than the naked too. However these are almost new machines (they only started in '03), so I dont know what'll happen in 2-3 yrs from now. The SV1000 has been confirmed in the lineup again for '07, which I am very happy with. I am guessing the resale value would drop if it stops being sold or undergoes a big makeover.

Z1000 have held value well since coming out in 03 (unless modded a lot), but dont forget its getting a big revamp for 07 so that would affect pre 07 model prices

I was going to trade the Z on a FZ1 until i test rode it. Sorry to say but it has no clearance when cornering
and the fueling is absolutely shit house. Not to mention no bottom end power. Lined it up against the
Z with a mate and made the FZ1 piss big time. Go for the SV any day.

Don't know what they're on about but the SV has been improved imensly. Its actually the same engine as it was in the famous TLR except detuned and improved. The new 07 will have even better improvements with the EFI and emissions

Im very happy with the SVthou, its powerful enough to scare me but is very happy to lounge around at the speed limit. Very predictable, doesnt feel like it wants you to go fast all the time but is willing and able when needed.
As said, the bike is VERY predictable and the constant torque in any gear makes it sooo much fun on the road which is where "most" of us ride 99% of the time. People keep talking about top end and so forth but iv kept up with "race" bikes (GSXR,ZXR,R1 etc) and even leave most of them for dead at the start. You have to ask yourself how many times are you going to get over 200km/h and go "top speed"!? If this is your intention then you need to buy a bike for track use

The brakes are the worst thing I reckon, 2 potters and not enough power or feel, Im getting braided lines. The suspension is fairly budget but I cant say I have a prob with it. Can't really agree with the brakes but the suspension is a definate. A bit of tweaking can get you a long way or just simply put the GSXR's front forks and your ready to go. Check out some great posts on "http://www.svdownunder.com"
I usually get 230km to the 17ltr tank (put in about 14.5) when im taking it easy but on average the light come on at 200km. Keep in mind thought that this is not my daily ride and i only take it out on the weekends so i get a twisty wrist at times The only problem i found with mine in the begining was blimping the throttle. I only got the bike and i blimped the throttle and the bike turned off. Done that a few time until i had the first service at 200km. After that its been flawless!!! Even with only a slight blimp it causes no problems and its even got Yoshi cans (no Powercomander)

Yeah....but at the same time you're getting a thou for $5K less than any other one
I brought mine at the begining of the year and paid under $14.5K with the cans compared with the GSXR's or the R1's which were around $18K

I think I'm going to get an SV1000 anyway, as long as they'll trade my bike at a decent price.

Good choice Trust me....you won't be dissapointed. Iv brought my SV1000S at the begining of the year and i couldn't be happier with the bike. I brought the bike for the road.....i never intended to race the bike so i brought something for the "street" with a bit of "spirit"
Oh yeah......and you just can't beat the sound of a twin!!!!

Guys - there is an answer !!

You should have bought a Suzuki Bandit 1200S (GSF1200S). It's the Suzuki equivalent of the FZ1S, with an admittedly old carburetted engine, but does all of the things and FZ1S does, but with the serious low down torque!!

    Seriously cheap price too......

...but I am a little biased.

Actually a triple was my first choice, Speed Triple, but it doesn't have the fairing protection or luggage capibilities I need for touring.

sorry to whore out ya thread but i had almost the same question but im deciding between a

    zx-10r or a SV1000s

now ive test rode both but there in completly different catagories i also test rode the fireblade ri gsxr but there way too small the 10 feels the most comfy but at the same time i like to have nice even power with better acceleration but i also want something thats gonna scare the shit outta me and keep me on my toes ??

so the question is v-twin awesome sounding easy riding bike or a inline 4 sports bike thats gonna keep a grin from ear to ear and have enough power to keep me happy for a long time
Dont Fight with utes while on your bike it hurts

Iv been down this road before and know exactly what all of you are going through.
    600 Vs 1000....price, looks, technology.....value for money
It was a very difficult choice as with anything you buy but the choice of bikes i narrowed it down to was:
    - Honda F4i - Great bike but it was a 600 and it was dearer that the thou. Inline 4 which gets to use its power about 10,000 RPM which in my opinion is meant for the track.
    - R1/ZX10R/GSXR1000 - Same as above.....a little expensive and there are just SOOOOO many of them out there. I also wanted a bike for a bit of a "non-race" feel to it....bit more upright so i can go for a 3 hour ride and not feel like someone belted me with a baseball bat
    - Suzuki Bandit 1200S - Now this was the final decision. Bandit was more upright and easier to ride in my opinion but the Bandit was carby and that was the ultimate downfall. I brought my bike in summer and even then the dealer had trouble getting the bike to idle. Air Vs Water cooled and the sound of the twin just won me over.
The Bandit is still a great bike for what it is and near indistructable as many stunt-riders use them. As a matter of fact my old man is looking to buy the new 07 Bandit this year and seeing as thought its only $10,500....i guess you can't complain about the price!!!!!

SV will definatelly satisfy any rider out there but then again. For "newer" riders it is definatelly the more "forgiving" bike as it has constant torque and predictable power were as the inline 4's you crank the throttle....wait.....wait and then all of a sudden the power comes on and your arms feel like they're going to get riped out of their sockets.
Everything comes down to personal preference at the end of the day YOU have to make the ultimate decision and fork out the money for it so make sure you go and ride a few bikes before making the final decision.

    Good luck with it

Quite different bikes really, try them, both good bikes and get good reviews. I certainly looked at both these 2 before I bought mine. The main criticisms is that the Suzuki is fairly conservative looking and built to a price which admittedly is competitive, the FZ1 seems to be universally from the reviews a little lacking at the lower end given that it is a litre bike, the comments you have received from owners here seem pretty spot on. The choice should come down to an individuals preferences.

Prolly the best advice I can give you (and good on you for riding both), is think about what you’ll be using the bike for. Me, I do most of my riding at or near the speed limit and will get to 2-4 trackdays a year. The only time I’ll normally nail it on the road is when clubsports need to be taught humility. SVthou suits me to a tee, it is perfectly happy at 60kph.
I recently test rode a ZX10 too and honestly, I just can’t see the point unless you do a lot of trackdays. It’s a stupendous bike, I loved it but it is physically small, doesn’t have much torque down low and I would kill myself.

Then again when has buying a bike had anything to do with logic? Go with your heart and treat that throttle with the deepest respect.
