    Helmet Damage

Hey psb'ers just wanting some advice on whether the damage sustained by my helmet from a rock is going to undermine the safety of the helmet? The dent is about 10mm diameter but seems to have gone through all the layers.

If it's penetrated the layers then it's at risk - you now have a weak point for the helmet to fracture at.

Sucks I know but get a new one.

Did you drop the helmet or was it damaged in a crash?

At the end of the day your melon is the most important bit of your body, arms & legs can be damaged/lost & you can get around that - if your head is fkd then its wheelchair, spoonfeeding and adult-nappy's for the rest of your days... I would be inclined to buy a new one.

Cheers guys I thought that this might be the case, just was trying to ignore it but I can't anymore like you said when it comes to safety and especially the head should get a new one. I was riding along through roadworks when a truck flying through the other way sent a rock hurling at me among a million others but this was the one that hit. Sucks after something so small I need to fork out more.

At least the rock didnt smash you in the face...

Buy the best lid you can knowing at the end of the day its disposable & could get written off in a matter of minutes... Kinda sucks! I replaced a helmet 2 years back after getting hit in the face by a pheasant at 60mph... damn thing broke my visor off, put visible cracks in the chinpiece & nearly broke my neck - my Lid&Leathers cover on my insurance paid for a new lid, just glad I had the visor down!

You already got rocks in ya head so I wouldn't worry

On a serious note if thats gone through multiple layers it looks like a good excuse for a trip to the shiny new lid factory

Wow pheasant in the face thats a new one for me, I had a mate hit a duck in the chest then hit the head but that is interesting. Yeah I know I am about to get a new bike my big bike and I can hear the bank account crying already . I will go out and get a good one again and look at getting it covered in insurance although that will hurt to as I am still young. But like you have said it is worth it for your safety plus I get a new lid try and focus on the positives

Christ, things like these make me worried about forking over half a grand for a helmet. It pays itself off in a crash, but a couple rocks small rocks to the face I'd rather a cheaper helmet.

I know what you mean, but if you do get the higher quality gear I would do what 470four has done and get it covered in your insurance

I don't buy cheap helmets. (Yes I think $500 is a cheap helmet)
Buy a cheaper bike so you can afford a better helmet if you have to.

Would that be covered by insurance? I have gear insurance cover as well. I guess I better look into it more. I'm with AAMI.

It will be fine provided your visor has an Aus standards sticker on it...

Jokes aside, cracks, splits and dents in helmets really can be a serious issue. They may look fine for many years of use, but then when it comes to the 'crunch', they may just shatter as a result of there being hairline cracks through the shell which upon impact can accelerate the shattering of a helmet.

My gf's helmet was found with a few scratches after she left it on the handlebars of her pitbike, and when we questioned her mum about what had happened to it she said "the wind must have blown it off"... in the garage, srsly? Our thinking is that she knocked it off by accident and didn't want to admit it, can't be sure of that, nor can we be sure that when it fell off it didn't wreck it.

Definitely a worry, I'm very dubious about letting her wear it for on road use... might be time for her to get a shiny new pretty one.

My thinking is that a drop from a height would be more to worry about then a chip from a rock though. It's up to you to decide that. How hard did it really hit? Think about the kinetic energy being transferred... drop a helmet from a height and it has its whole weight times the velocity it has achieved by the time it hits the ground, and pretty much all that energy is transferred into the helmet. Whereas the rock is presumably much lighter, and although it would have been travelling faster would be carrying less energy (i'd assume), plus this energy would not all be transferred to the helmet as much of it was still with the rock as it flew off after deflection. Long story short, i'd say a drop from handlebar or seat height would be worse than a rock... but hey, i really dunno, just guessing.

Just go with your gut feeling dude.

Yeah I think a new one is in order as it is a fairly serious dent and would just put my mind at rest, and perhaps I can get some visors with the sticker this time fingers crossed, mind you its only for when I get to Perth with the picky traffic cops

Huggy, 2 things to consider, a bullet fired outr of a gun is deadly, only weighs a few grams?

Plus when a helmet drops from handlebar height, its force it builds up is spread over a larger area than a stone or bullet, offering a higher chance of soaking up the impact without serious damage.

End of the day, if its penetrated the shell, its now a weak spot. But shells already have a couple large holes in em (for your eyes to look thru and your neck to poke thru, plus vents etc)...right?

New bike = good excuse for new brain holder anyways.
