    How did he pass?

Thought I'd share this with you and see if you can explain how he would have passed.

On Sunday a mate came round to show me his new Huosyng Aquila picked up the previouse week. He has had his licience for now 3 weeks with leasons through a reputable school. Any how Im looking over it with him sit down and tap the gear shift and pass the comment one down and four up to whcih he replies HUH ?

I said one down and four up...no no no neutral is down the up to 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc...
so i proceeded to show him where 1st was...he had been pulling of in 2nd all this time...now how does some one like that pass a test ?

Oh he also thought that the starter switch as the kill switch has he was pressing it while the bike was running and could not understand why nothing other than a strange sound happened.

Why was he looking for the kill switch in the first place?
And if the starter was the kill switch, how did he start the bike?

For starts, school = teach. The mind boggles on that one alone. How was he doing fig 8's?

He does have his licence now though, and his own bike, so teach him right. Show him that the licence means nothing when it comes to knowledge. Learning to ride properly from a good friend will be more rewarding than getting his licence.

Keep your eye on him and try to keep him safe until it all clicks.
It has a dual purpose. ~ Tom Smitheringale

Unfortunately motor bike licensing, like car licensing, does not test the drivers mechanical apptitude or knowledge of the vehicle in question (which I personally reckon is both wrong and dangerous). In this case, this is very scary in that not only had these subjects not been covered by the instructors (who are usually very thorough - or the rider simply did not pay attention), but the rider in question did not seek this information out (or by the look of it not even read his owners manual).

I'm guessing that you've taken this rider under your wing and given him a good educating!!

I have and have him with training wheels on for now, until I feel happy that he knows what he is doing...

If it is who I think it is, I work for the same company and have had many a conversation with him about bikes and protective gear.

Im thinking a few more conversations are in order. At least he was thinking of doing one of Alerts ride days, I may skip the lunchtime ride into the swan valley for the moment tho.

At least he's got a mate like you. Imagine him out loose on the streets without any further guidance..... eeeek. I'm glad I live in the SW.

Or maybe cos its a Hyosung sometimes the gearbox is 6 up none down, and sometimes the starter button does work as a killswitch it may just depend on the day.

My mate had a hyosung and just after he got his licence I took him for a ride, we stopped at a mates house and he we parked out the front and he said

"im not to comfortable about leaving my bike here"

" I said why?", wondering why after parking his car in my mates safe street for the past ten years he was now uncomfortable

He said "cos someone might steal it"

I said" im pretty sure if someones gonna steal a bike in broad day light they are more likely to steal my 05 R1 than your hyosung"

He said "yeah but I dont have a steering lock, it syas it does but for some reason hyosungs have a position for it but they just dont include it'

I said "let me try" I turned it to full lock and put the steering lock on.

He didnt even know how it worked.

He also assured me he doesnt have a neutral indicator on his bike for the same strange hyosung reason. I got on and said "you see that green light with the N in it, thats neutral"

Something is a foot. He is new, willing to learn, so Im sure everything will be fixed up good as new. Props to you for taking him under your wing.

I just wont encorage him to go for a lunchtime ride to a winery for the time being (I still remember my noob days on dodgy driveways)
