Legal headlight tinting. Crystalite treatment.

I had my headlight "legally" tinted the other day. This is a new system to Perth and in my opinion looks awesome. It still maintains the the standard white light and the same light efficiency to be emitted from your h/light and has been approved by the manager of vehicle standards of the DPI. As this stuff is a polycarbonate layer it actually adds protection to your light. You can get the tint in a small range of colours, Black (same as mine) 2 shades of blue, pink, purple and i think 2 shades of green. Mine was $150.00 but for a dual light system like R1 or similar you will be looking at about $200- $250.00

I have ridden a few times at night since iv'e had it done and it does not reduce the light performace, and instead of putting "illegal" tinted h/light covers for day use and then finding a place to carry them later. Using this method you dont have to worry

I guess the cost is up a bit due to the fact it's not a tint like window film, it is applied by these little sponges they use and the process takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and the service is mobile ie they come to you. So i guess it is warranted.

I wonder if its possible to source the tint and do it yourself, I like the look but would pay $100 max to tint my lights..

from a kwakka forum

DECALFX.com! Smoked Headlight Film Tint Overlays Vinyl Decals Stickers Lens Protection for Head Lights, Fog Lights, Foglights, Tinted Smoke Windscreen, Lens Paint
o to start off you need to order transparent vinyl tint of whatever color you want. The person I get mine from uses DecalFX.com and the stuff is great.
The sheets will be 2 feet wide then you order the length that you want. I believe for just headlights you can just get 1 foot, but if you want to do the tail too you will need 2 feet.(not completely sure on that one though, measure yours out) You will want to have some extra off the edges so you can stretch it. Also, if it is your first time I would get some extra.

Now once you get it and are ready for install:
TOOLS,
Squeegee-should come with your order, but to be safe ask when ordering.
Heat gun-hair dryer will work, but heat gun is easier
Spray bottle with a mix of soap and water.
Exacto knife

1. Clean off light throughly
2. Pre-cut the tint a little bigger then the light
3. Wet the light and the sticky side of the tint and put the tint against the light.
4. Now wet the outside of the vinyl and start to work from the top with the squeegee. You need to hold the top of the tint and just push the water out from under the tint.
5. Once you get the whole top side down start lightly heating the middle of the tint and stretch it past the bottom of the light so that it all sits flat on the light. You will probably have creases, but just pull more to the side to get those out. DO NOT HEAT UP THE TINT MUCH WHEN IT IS NOT IN CONTACT WITH THE LIGHT, You will make the tint start to crumple up and that piece is ruined. Hold the heat source back a ways when stretching.
6. After you get that down, wet the outside again and start working out the air and water from under the tint. You may get some creases , but just use some heat and the squeegee and take your time. They will eventually come out, but again dont heat too much or you wont be able to get them out.
7. Now that it is all down, take the knife and cut around the sides, dont go along the light, but the body between the light and body. After you make a cut around the whole light, take your squeegee and now apply more heat around the edges and push them all in. It wont want to stick, but with heat and pressure it will.

Yeah you may be able to, but from what i gather these guys have pretty much got the supply thing all sewn up, and i think at first they had a few fuck ups with application like the stuff frying up and the like but they have it all sorted now. So at least if they were to screw up it then becomes their problem!

Is that stuff legal over here Mr Moose? I guess its a cheaper option if it is. But for the rooting around gettin the stuff here and all, this was done and dusted in a couple of hours.

You can buy rolls of tint from car stores like coventrys etc. Not very expensive either.

so...one question...

You say it's legal, but what is cuntstubble jellyback thinks otherwise? Were you given any written conformation that it's road legal to use?

And what is the process for removing it if you do get a yellow sticker?

Yes they give you a little peice of paper when you have it done. And if Constable Jellyback or his sidekick officer Squidlips decide you need a nice sticker for your efforts they have a process of removal for this stuff. I would not have done it if they were not able to remove it.
