Live to Ride, ZX900R down ...

This is not good news, but, Live to Ride [ZX900R] Mark, had a rather big one on Sunday on his way home from my Toodyay ride. Mark crashed on Canning Mills Rd and he has done some serious damage to himself.

I have been talking a lot to his sister in-law and she rang me again tonight to ask if I could please post this up. He is confined to laying on his back but his family all agree that he would be best served with visits from his friends to cheer him up.

So, Mark Smith is at Royal Perth, level 4 in the high dependency ward, he is apparently going to be there for quite some time.

PS, Logie was with him at the time and also crashed, he is fairly knocked around and has broken a toe but is OK.

Always sucks to hear a bike and rider has gone down, even more so when it is someone you know, and more so when they don't come off 'lightly'.
Here is to hoping you make a good recovery mentally and physically Mark; thoughts and prayers go to you.

Logie, hope it doesn't keep you out of action for long, (or at least coming and seeing us down the pub for a drink and a laugh). Hope it heals up nice and fast!

Oh man this is really sad news . I've also ridden with zx900r and Logie and both are very good riders. I hope zx900r makes a full recovery with no side affects. Good to hear Logie is relatively ok. Hopefully I'll be seeing the two of you again!

I have been into the hospital a few times to see him yesterday and today. Ive also spent a bit of time on the phone to his family trying to explain to them how it all happened. Ive actually just got home from seeing him at RPH tonight, he is still pretty drugged up to help with the pain, as you can imagine so he falls in and out of consciousness often.
For anyone who pops down to see him, he hasn't accepted the severity of his injuries yet. So i ask that you just go long with what he sais and reassure him that he will get back out riding soon.
If he asks where his bike is, it's at my place.
Also, when you're talking to him, you have to lean right over his face, as he cant move his neck at all, and trying to do so could make things worse.

And besides a few bruises and an annoying broken toe, im fine, cant wait to get back onto the bike.

Un fortunately AWSE, Mark does not remember at the moment what happened.

All i can tell you is that Mark was a few hundred metres in front of me, as he took the right hander, i had lost sight of him. As i was mid bend, a big gravel cloud off into the bush caught my eye, in that split second i had a million things running through my head, was he still alive, how badly injured is he, what am i going to have to do, is someone going to see us in the bush from the road side, will my phone even get signal to call 000 out here and out of all of that whilst in mid corner, the only thing i could think of was how am i going to get there as quick as possibly and the natural instinctive reaction that took place was to grab the brakes (yes i realize that was the thing NOT to do, but emotions took over, and this was the first accident ive seen that i knew wasn't going to be a small one, hopefully its my last ) the bike stood up instantly and the next second im heading off the bend into the gravel myself where im looking to try and spot Mark out.
I think i managed to wipe off a portion of speed before entering. After a few tumbles and flips i came to a rest, about a foot away from a rather solid tree and about 20 metres closer to the road than to where i would later find Mark and a few metres further away, his bike.

Mate, I'm not sure that now is the best time to be asking that sort of question, nor is it the most tactful way to ask it...

Damn. I've never even met the guy, but these reports always get to me regardless - as I'm sure they do everyone else on here.

perfectly understandable. my wife said I was in denial like that for the first couple of weeks of my extended visit last year.

Logie, glad to hear you didn't fare quite as badly, although broken toes do still sting like a sonofabitch. here's to a speedy recovery for you both
