    what rich said...
finding a proper motard with long service intervals will be hard.

long service intervals needs lower engine stress, higher oil capacity (and thus more weight, which isn't what motards are about).

the drz sounds like what you want. on paper they're nothing special but they're available, cheap, service interval is good and you'll be able to get replacement bits for it easy. they have enough power to be a dickhead on...

I currently have a 2008 Husky SM510r for sale. It has 6000km on the clock, it is not as highly stressed as some of the other motards but the oil and filter change takes all of about 20min. I have ridden most of the other Motards and by far this was the pick for me. Awesome performance, surprisingly comfortable, easy to maintain and reliable.
Mine has a heap of extras such as tuning software and if I didnt have to go to one bike capable of carrying a pillion I certainly wouldnt be selling.
Only my opinion but if I were riding a street triple I would want my other bike to be on par performance wise otherwise I would get annoyed, you may struggle with the DR400 or the KTM690, I found both to be rather sluggish in comparison.
Check out my ad in the for sale section

XR600 air cooled tractor motor whack on some cbr250rr wheels would be a cheap reliable option.
But imo they are just so ugly.

    Both pretty cheap.
I seen a few around and a little pssed off I cant do any thing about it. I'm in the middle of sorting 2 new old bikes and fixing up the R...

I'm pretty sure I'll do the RM thing at some stage but maybe keep as dirt bike only.

Old 2 strokes have got to be the affordable option for a reasonable performance SM daily runner, if the rider is prepared to keep plugs clean and keep the maintenance up.

Hmmm I wonder if my WR wheels fit an IT490...

Agreed with azazl... in motard world, 2 stroke maintenance isn't so bad. the maintenance on a 4 stroke motard is just as damn often, but there is more to do, and more parts involved.

I know I'd certainly prefer to just fill the oil tank up every 300-400 kays and put a new piston/rings in there every 5000-10000 or whatever rather than wanking around with valve clearances, new piston/rings anyway, having to get the cam degreed, etc every time you pull the head off.
    stuff

I think I proved that one pretty well

The drz are a great fun bike, especially with a big bore kit and the 39mm carb. Still not a total race bike but they are fun.

I have just bought myself a set of tard wheels for my XR400. My question is, the front rim is a 17 x 3.5, does a 120/70 x 17 tyre fit between the forks or do you have to go down to a 110/70 x 17 tyre??????????????????

get a tape measure out and measure between the shock boots. May need to remove them for enough clearance.
On my klx i put a 120 and it just skimmed the edge of the fork covers so i just filed a couple mm of the edge
