Folks, I was having a chat with a Mobil oil rep the other day and in amongst his excellent advice on engine lubrication, he cautioned me about police multanova cams and how they are now able to photograph our rear number plates (as well as taking a pic of the front).

I know that this "technology" is used in the US and UK etc.. but here in this big country town we call Perth? Umm.. I was and still am skeptikal.

As a matter of fact, I haven't stopped being flashed by those things ever since.. and I'm still unscathed *touching wood*.

This dude was absolutely certain they implemented this new camera system towards the end of last year.

Comments?

Western Aust is the only state that doesn't take pics from the rear (I think? not too sure about Tassis and NT?) anyhoo all the eastern States and South Aust certainly do.

It is not a modification to the cameras, they don't care whether the traffic is cumming or going.

It is to do with state legislation.

There will be plenty of notice.....

A backpacker was test riding my bike last week and allegedly got his photo taken a few times.

Both from the front.....allegedly.

I think he's got bad info.

Ok I'll make this short and sweet to avoid reviving a long old annoying thread.

They can take as many photographs as they like of motorcyclists front, rear, top, side, underneath or even x-ray if they really want to.

The bottom line is, the RIDER cannot be identified (unless wearing an open faced helmet). There is NO LEGISLATION that allows them to hold the OWNER of the motorcycle responsible for the alleged offence.

Hope this educates you enough to let this thread die for another 6 months.

it's a good thing that we're all law abiding citizens and won't need to worry about it cos we'd never be speeding . . . . . . . right?
what would happen, if this were gone, would you be there, for how long. . . . . .

No not that I'm aware of. Unless they have bought some new equipment lately. I have heard that in the United States they have units that take a photo before you go thru the multanova (front shot) then it takes another photo as you are departing the multanova (rear shot).

I would imagine this system being VERY expensive... and seeing as there is no legislation to allow them to enforce owner onus, I cant see how they can justify the cost.
If you can... you MUST!

I'd be thinking, the less times bikes get flashed the less likely they are to attempt to impliment such equipment/pass legislation?

Til then I'll continue to not get my photo taken rear facing or not.

Yeh.. my mate and me were riding eastbound on Canning Hwy over the Albany Hwy overpass - just b4 burswood - and saw this grey box with a red lense (looked like a flash lamp) on the ground chained to a tree.

Now WTF is that? Anyone see it too?

so if i wear a ski mask while im driving the car they cant pin me with a speeding fine cos they cant prove its me?

every other state has cameras that take you from behind (thou technically our cameras take us from behind aswell ) and they have no probs fining motorcyclists.
i guess we are just lucky
once the government realises how much revenue they are losing, they will buy new cameras in order to "save lives"
Respect is earned, not enforced.
