Nail in the rear tire :(

First of I apologise for yet another tyre thread.

Got back from uni today to find the rear tyre on the 636 completely flat put it on the rear stand and surprise surprise dirty big nail residing in the pirelli (see crap pic).

    Part 1:

Would it be to much of a gamble to ride to tyres for bikes (depending on the extent of the leak)? or is it best just to remove the wheel and take it in? remembering I am not all that mechanical skilled.

    Part 2:

Is this a plug job or should I play it safe and get the tyre replaced which I will have to do eventually regardless (insert tiny violin for poor uni student).

    Thoughts tire guru's?

I'd have no worries about putting a plug there.

Me...I would jam one of the quick repair plugs in it(get kit from Auto one, etc) and continue on my way...

The Supercorsa on the back of my GSXR1000 current has that type of repair and is still being thrashed...

    Rich is on the money..

Plug it yourself..its close enough to the middle it won't cause any problems..

My tyre got a nail in it at 200kms old and 4000km later I'm still riding on it no worries

As long as it's not deflating rapidly and you take it easy it should be OK, I rode ~60km with a big arse nail in mine and it held up OK

Yeah from the look a mushroom plug from a tyre place will be fine

Yet another for the plug-it-yourself crowd.

Repaired it should be fine, but you're the one who has to have confidence in it and it's your safety, so if you're not up to making the decision or the repair then check with the tyre shop and get them to do it, small price to pay for peace of mind

out of curiousity... would you lot have the same opinion if the nail was not in the base of the groove but rather on the smooth road contact sides?
    Its all good.

If there's one thing about tyres Iv'e learnt after 25 years truckin round the scrub - draggin 70 of em on triples - is - when ya least expect it - expect it

Shame to have to read on ya headstone - He snufffed it - cause he was doing 270kph on a plugged tyre - & was to cheap - to buy a new one !!

Ya crazy - if you ever rely on a plugged tyre - or equally as bad - a recap - only ever buy new - & buy quality - not cheap S***.

When I got my flat the other week I was going to do a thread showing a temporary DIY fibre plug going in...

I just may do one next week when I get back...

T4B will remove the tyre and check/grind the area before determining if they are confident plugging it for you.
$70 for the plug repair (retail - less if you're known) and you're on your way.
If Peter tell's you it's a no go - you're best coughing up for a new hoop.

Would it be a problem riding it from Cockburn to T4B's in its present condition?

Do the strip repair and ride it down to Peters.
If you ride it flat you'll just fuck the tyre proper.
The strip repair takes about 30 second to do... easy as.
I did just that this afternoon... got a mushroom plug fitted and i'm off with my crew tomorrow for some ride.like.stolen country action.

I have tyre/rim insurance with Swann to cover me for such events. I have used plugged tyres a few times with no dramas, I was always mindful of it though and didn't thrash the bike too much until the tyre was worn out and replaced. They work but they're not worth risking your life or bike on.

Yep - supercrap kit looks like the rest do...
One t-handle bores out the hole,
the 2nd handle is a needle shape to poke the strip in, you simply pull sharply back out (which severes the strip from the needle inside the tyre) and you're all set to re-inflate the tyre.
Clean up the strip site of excess and ride off.

Do gooders are always good at spending other people's money. Put a plug or a tube in it and go ride.
