    Nolan N41

    G'day,

I don't know where this should be posted, so it landed here.
I have two Nolan N41 helmets that I want to paint. I have them stripped down to the Styrofoan and vents. Can anybody tell me how to remove the Styrofoam and vents?

    Thanks, Karl

The vents are just glued in and should pull out with some careful knife work and prying.

You can't remove the "styrofoam" (EPS) liner. There is no need to anyway. I never have. I also have a friend who paints helmets for F1, V8SC, Karts, MX and Road Racer's and he never removes the liners either.

Two other things to remember. You need to mask OVER the ASA standards approval sticker because you can't get another one (legally) to replace it and also if it is a polycarbonate helmet then it should never be painted with anything but waterborne paints. I've only seen it once but Lacquer thinner and enamel reducers can turn a polycarbonate helmet into a misshapen "art piece".

I have seen people get away with it in the past with out the helmet deforming but I have no idea what it has done to the structural integrity.

    Thanks Veefore,

I appreciate the heads up on the water based paint.
I understand that the Styrofoam need not be removed to paint.
The N41 has movable vent covers on the outside which don't appear to be glued.
I can't figure how to remove the vent covers from the outside of the helmet without removing the Styrofoam and attacking from the inside.
The vent covers must come off to do a proper paint job.

    IMHO, of course, Karl

    Of course Nolan's reply was......

"We acknowledge good receipt of your message and would like to thank you for your interest in our products.
We kindly inform you that our warranty doesn't cover damage caused by the application of stickers or adhesives and colour change or use of chemical products.
We advise against modifying the helmet in any parts."
