Just had a new offer come up- one of the guys is going home and wants to get rid of

    1) Queensland registered GSXR1100 1989 low kms, (with riding gear which I could sell).
    2) throwing in a early 90's mitsubishi Magna executive, not registered and needs some work

He's asking $6000 but pretty sure he would go down to at least $5000

Sounds pretty good to me and least it's coming from somebody I vaguely know.

What's the GSXR1100 like? The GSX have always had a reputation as a bullet proof engine and 1100cc is about 400cc more than I was looking for. Usually sensible rider so should be ok and will be nice to have power up my sleeve on tap.

Question is- how hard is it to register a vehicle in another state? Do you just go over the pits? Will look over the car to see if it's a wrecker job, a fixable job or just sell on unregistered.

Tell me what you think. Taking it for a spin this arvo.

No idea about anything else, but getting the bike registered here is pretty easy as long as it is road worthy - costs around $140 from memory and a bit of paper work, and a bit of your time, but not too long if you get to the depot early enough.
I can't think what more you could possibly need to know... except maybe this:

Probably a "J" model, with the Slingshot Carbies. Air/Oil Cooled engine and under 200kg dry, they started getting a little porky again when they went liquid cooled. Good ergonomics and running gear made a good long distance sportsbike.

If you got a QLD plated vehicle, you'll need to get a RWC for it every 12 months (or so), and if you want to keep it QLD plated, you'll need a QLD garaging address.
Getting the rego transferred over here is pretty simple (in theory) - get it into a road worthy condition and take it over the pits, then visit the people who take your money at the licensing centre...

they are a awesome bike that has a large following for a reason. easy to work on, parts are common second hand and tons of performance stuff (turbos, weisco etc etc)

regarding the power, they are only as quick as your wrist, quite simple really. treat it with respect and all will be well

    89 will be a K model with RWU forks and I think a 170 rear, but you'd get a 180 in I reckon.
Air/oil cooled 1127 motor is definately bullet proof but you'd have to look at the k's to determine how good condition it is.
This motor was used right up to the 2006 1200 Bandit so you know it's strong.

K models had a name for bad handling but I had one and it never gave me any issues, but I ride like a girl.
Third gear was noisy right up to the day I sold it.

Just took the bike for a spin.

Done about 80,000 and needs a bit of work but on the whole pretty good package.

Just got to do a revs check and pretty much think it's in the bag.

Will double check this forum again tomorrow morning- so last comments or forever hold your peace!

80,00ks for $6k! You can do much betyter than that! I once saw a 96 model for $6k at Dale Brittons with 40k on the clock.

Save ya $$$ there are better handling bikes around.

    Here are a few comparo's

Rob: $6k for the bike, gear and cage. Cage is probably worth about $2-3k (unseen), and the gear a couple of hundred (?).

That said, there's some pretty good bikes in the paper today for $2000-$3000

The Magna is no doubt a bucket of puss and it would be foolish to bring this into the equation, unreg early 90s probably worth $500 tops. If the guy is going back to Qld then you are in a really good bargaining position and I would suggest $4k tops for both.

I'm in Darwin guys- the market isn't particularly prolific... Apparently the army guys snap up things pretty quick.

The only other bikes worth looking at the last month have been a couple diversions, on old CB1100 which was pretty ratty, and another ratty old BMW K100. Even the dirt bikes up here seem pretty pricey for what you get.

Took her for a spin and she seemed pretty good- needs a service some routine things and there is a slight pulse in the front brake from a warped? front rotor. Stops well still though- is this a safety issue?

Turns out he was joking about the Magna- was a rust bucket anyway- so not really lost anything.

Still welcome opinions- making up my mind this evening.

Well Darwin is a bit differnt as 2nd Hand bikes are more expensive up there.

Warped disc is not good and a pair will set ya back $600 for ones from Aussie Discs.

Sometimes its still cheaper to buy from over east etc and get it freighted up. I would talk him down as he is desperate.

But considering the lack of corners in the N.T a buzzy GSXR may give ya the shits and be uncomfortable to ride. Might be better off waiting for a ZZR1100 or CBR1000F to come up.

For <10K I could line you up with a Bimota SB6, running a worked yoshimura equipped bored GSX1100R motor ala 1996.
