taken from pocketracer.com.au
might be worth looking into
So you think you just brought a cheap 49cc from some guy from the boot of a car. Or it just turn up on a courier from some auction site. And just because it has a sticker on the engine saying 49cc doesn’t mean a thing.
We have news for you!
The Chinese have a very creative way of calculating engine capacity.
First Method :
They calculate the correct engine capacity and then add the combustion chamber.
40cc + 9cc for the combustion chamber = 49cc
Second Method :
BULLSHIT TO THE IMPORTER!! This seems to be the most popular method. Then even the importer, thinks he is selling a 49cc engine.
Method for identifying your pocket bike engine.
The problem is that all the engines look alike from the outside, and there is loads of different manufacturers of pocket bike engines (at least 50 that we know), so there is NO definitive method of telling from the outside what the capacity is.
THIS IS A REAL HASSLE, the engine has a one piece barrel and head, so you have to remove the barrel to check the size, also the spark plug hole is offset so measuring the stroke is also difficult. This is why it’s so easy to be mislead on the TRUE size of your engine.
You will need to remove the barrel from the crank case and measure the BORE and STROKE
The formula for calculating the size of an engine is very simple - High School Math. So go find a school kid to help you.
For very accurate figures you will require a dial gauge and verniers, but for a ruff idea you can use a ruler. It least you will know if it is in the ball park of 49cc.
1. Remove the barrel/head from the engine.
2. Measure the piston diameter. This should be close to the BORE
3. The STROKE is harder to measure because the barrel and head are one piece and this will have to be removed from the engine.
4. With the barrel removed, rotate the crank shaft to bottom dead centre and use that as your zero,
5. Rotate the crank 180 degrees (to TOP dead centre) while orientating the Piston in its normal direction. Measure the distance the Piston travelled and this should be the stroke, (this should be any where from 24mm to 33mm)
Now you have the figures,
BORE divide by 2 gives you the Radius
REMEMBER YOUR HIGH SCHOOL MATH
(Pi x R^2) x height = volume divide by 1000 to give cc
e.g.
( Pi x (BORE/2) x (BORE/2)) x STROKE
example:
3.1416 x (44/2) x (44/2) x 26 then divide by 1000 to give CC not Cmm
You're the proud owner of a 39.5cc badged as a 49cc
THIS IS VERY COMMON - And you are not alone
When you're next thinking of buying a cheap bike ask the question, What’s the Bore and Stroke, and can they show you a similar engine apart. Please CONTACT US HERE AT POCKET RACER with any questions and we will help you sort out your bike.

Myself and two mates are keen, I'll keep an eye on how it turns out in the thread
mmmmm sacrilicious
I'm keen - pending a tax rebate update.
I've also drummed up a little interest in my workplace, another 2 or 3 interested buyers. Very interested in racing in a field of 20 or so - can you hire out a karting track for a couple of hours and take these on?
There's a shop in Northbridge(corner of Fitzgerald and Newcastle) selling pocket bikes priced at $900 - $1400 cash depending on which model. I stopped for a look the other day to check it out. He had a stock of 15 and has already shifted most of them & is already on the look out for more stock.
Here's a pic from his website - and damn if that guy on the silver Kawasaki isn't one hell of a spunk!!!
