News must be slow gotta start bagging someone, and ciggies are an easy target. No-one holds a gun to ya head and says smoke these or else. Why don't they hassle the government more if they're serious.

How many countries do they carry the Marlboro logo's in. I would think that GB, Aus, Ger are definately banned. So how many rounds do we see the logo's?

But in an emailed response last week, Stoner said that while he understood their views and agreed that children should not smoke, he did not believe Philip Morris's sponsorship of Ducati was aimed at young people.

"At the same time I firmly believe that every adult human being should retain the right to make his or her own decisions in life, whether correct or not," he said.

Marlborough wouldn't do it if it wasn't effective. It may not make people want to take up smoking just because Casey is sponsored by them, but it is all about brand awareness.

They are particularly targeting India and China as places like Australia are a shrinking market for them.

Marlboro branding is on sale, not just their cigarettes. You'd be surprised at exactly how many non-tobacco products they sell each year. It's an iconic brand.

Watching stoner actually makes me want to ride bikes really fast and do wheelies.( and bone his missus)

Maybe we should take the bikes out cos that gives me dangerous ideas. Or at least make them ride at a sensible safe pace.

Someone remind me which countries even allow the Marlboro logo to be "shown"? The Chinese GP? All the rest have the barcode there or is the barcode placed there by post-processing on the feeds we watch?

p.s. here is some alternative Marlboro advertising from the Sepang GP last year

Goverment is still very happy with the income stream from the fags consumed and it is still a very legal substance to consume!

And the bikes /cars look very nice and do go fast!

Next will be alcohol and then Fast food, so all we can look forward to is a Carbontax sponsored letuce leaf eating competition, ohh wait that produces CO2 commonly known as the shits powered with methane gas expulsions,.... ohh no, what about the planet and how do we get a crowd to this event?

Worldwide advertising of tobacco products in mass media like newspapers, magazines, television and radio has been curtailed by the World Health Organisation's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Consequently, the methods by which tobacco companies are permitted to promote their products have been heavily restricted. Sporting sponsorship, particularly in motorsport, is one of the few remaining areas in which tobacco companies are able to promote their products, so naturally a good portion of the companies' advertising budgets are focussed on this area.

I'd suggest that if not for those restrictions on media advertising, Marlboro's advertising budget would not be so concentrated on branding of motorsport livery. They might even cease sponsoring motorsport teams altogether.

If Action on Smoking and Health is genuinely concerned about Marlboro's sponsorship of the Ducati Marlboro Team, might I suggest they lobby governments worldwide (starting with our own Commonwealth Government) to repeal legislation such as the Tobacco Advertising Prohibition Act 1992 (Cth)? In other words, open up more of the advertising market to Marlboro so that their motorsport sponsorship is not so obnoxious.

Alternatively, feel free to enter into a bidding war with Marlboro to sponsor the Ducati team in MotoGP. The going rate is about US$40 million. I'm sure that for that sort of money, Ducati would be delighted to have you on board, and by sponsoring Stoner you would be attaching your anti-smoking message to, in your own words, "a role model to children and young people worldwide".

So how about it, ASH? You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I can't believe they are going after Stoner...it's absolutely ridiculous. I think Rossi will probably be the only rider to EVER have a serious effect on who is going to sponsor the team. A team like Ducati, has Marlboro written in the script.

They're even talking to the people who organise the Australian of the year award because he got the award last year! It' ridiculous!

Another forum is doing some research onto who the leading party is and when we get an email address for some "constructive feedback", I'll be sure to let everyone know!

It's a complete joke.

I heard that on the radio this morning as well- another example of backclapping do gooders with nothing to do. cigarette sponsorship has been a part of motorsport for a long time. i'm not a smoker myself but if people want to do it good luck to them. i know i don't reach a smoke when i see a marlboro ad.
