I'm just wondering -- do the busybodies ever get the punchline that ANYBODY not actively involved in manufacturing motor products, who sponsors motorsport, is purely there to make a loss and write it off as advertising? Isn't the driving reason that motorsport is the only advertising avenue many of these products have left, purely because motorsport would be hugely short of moolah should it be withdrawn?
Do they want no outside sponsorship beyond honda, bridgestone, etc.?
Or do they report all this thinking that your average person can't connect the dots?
Frankly, I think it's disgusting that we can censor advertising in the first place that isn't inherently offensive. Either people can make up their own minds and that kind of censorship is draconic, or people are sheep, and have no free will. Which is anti-christian. Pick your fallacy.

Ducati.com
I question whether the story is even accurate. The link above takes you to the Ducati Factory MotoGP team's sponsorship page where no tobacco companies are mentioned. The article in the West Australian shows last years bike with all the Malboro livery but I can't remember seeing it on the bike this year.

Last year the only places in the world that allowed tobacco advertising was quatar and china, this year only china allowed it.

This is my favourite bit:
quote:
The anti-tobacco group Action on Smoking and Health, the youth health project Smarter than Smoking and the Australian Network on Young People and Tobacco have written to Stoner and his management at Ducati calling on him to relinquish his sponsorship deal with tobacco giant Philip Morris.
WTF! It's not like Marlboro are even a personal sponsor! What did they think he was going to reply with?
"Oh I see the error of my ways, let me just tell Ducati to get rid of all Marlboro sponsorship"
Sorry, this is boiling my blood!

^ Obviously not, the idea is to put pressure on Stoner to himself put pressure on Ducati to drop the Marlboro sponsorship. Not going to happen though, is it

So you're saying that we should impose our laws on the rest of the world? Pretty US-centric thinking there (tongue in cheek, not saying that's what you actually believe, but its not that big a leap).

Personally, I think its a good thing that Australia has taken pretty big steps in getting rid of smoking advertising.
|
I don't.
I'm not a smoker, I think its disgusting.
BUT... I think they should be free to advertise as they please.
Once you start restricting what people can print/say/paint/etc - you're on a slippery slope. Educate kids about teh perils/evils of smoking (surely everyone knows by now anyway with the pack pictures), but don't go setting legal precedents for encouraging censorship.

You know it makes sense.
