    Recent bike thefts...

Is it just me or has the rate of stolen bikes gone up over the last few months?
Being a recent victim myself, I can admit that I really didn't pay much attention to "bike stolen" threads, now, after experiencing firsthand, it seems to be happening more and more..

I thought I'd put this up as a reminder to us all to lock/alarm/booby trap/GPS track our pride and joy cause nothing hurts more than having it taken away by some piece of shit, knowing that you have a very small chance of recovering it, smaller still in the same condition.

Since my Honda was stolen, my replacement bike is now alarmed with motion/vibration and perimeter sensors, disc locked (another alarm built in as well) and chained (big motherfucker chain) to my garage floor through the swingarm and I am considering a GPS tracker as well.
The keys always go with me when I leave the house, always with me when I'm home. (thinking about dynabolting a safe somewhere)
Spare key is at a family member house.
The garage door is never up for any longer than necessary.
I try to slip in and out of home quietly.
I am not taking any chances this time round.

If anyone wants to add to this with security tips, products, ideas, etc, drop a post

    Cool

I have a theory on this situation. I think someone very close to you all is stealing your bikes. It happens quite frequently to PSB members for some reason.

I thought about the possibility of someone browsing Psb like a free bike catalog.
Then again I figure most of Perths streetbike riders are registered here so its only fair that the majority of thefts are from us. (if anyone has any actual statistics?)

I'd like to know for educational/preventative reasons how are they starting bikes without keys? Are they as easy to Hotwire as scooters? Then just break the in built steering lock?

If we know how there startin them maybe we can figure out some isolation switch or block plate

I wonder if the Honda Integrated Security System (HISS) is actually a deterrent for would be thieves. Would the bike be useless without the programed key? I'm sure they'd steal it then wonder how to start it later..

dont need to start it if you're just breaking it down for parts

I made the stupid mistake of leaving my keys on the bench overnight.
I guess older bikes without coded keys can be hotwired, besides that, its a matter of breaking the steering lock and/or wheeling away or lifting it onto a trailer/etc

Sounds like they just bust the steering lock and wheel it to victory. I personally have very little exposure when doing anything with the bike, and its on a very busy street so it makes it harder for wouldbe crims. Disc lock is on, its garaged (not really much deterant there) and keys are near on impossible to find . Plus it doesnt live in Southlake where i actually live, it moves occasionally.

    Some good suggestions Virt.

The harder you make it, the more likely they are to find a softer target. It sucks that you have to do these things, but that's life.

Dynobolted floor safe for keys & ground anchor for chain at a minimum and whenever I have contractors or people working at the property I always relocate the bike.

Im guessing, they would sell it as spare parts and make more money than risking to ride a stolen bike in public.
If my bike ever gets stolen, the first place to look for it would be ebay spare parts and seller from Sydney ....

On the other hand, I keep my bike fully insured and sleep well.
If someone wants it, they'll find the way to take it

This is true, the only thing we can do is make it as hard as possible in hopes that would-bes' throw it into the too hard basket and move on.

Suspect there are a couple of gangs at it .. the dirt and road/trial bikes often get stolen for joy rides and ridden to destruction in the bush.
The expensive road bikes are probably getting dismantled or maybe sent to other states (?)
Its not hard to beat the ignition of a bike if it doesn't have secure chip keys (like Honda does).
At the very least go with a disc lock (just remember its on there .. like the ones that come with a flouro band for the bars).

The reason for the spate of bike thefts is because WAPOL does sweet fuck all about them. They will chase you for doing 5km/hr over but if you hand them a thief's name, address, photo and details of his last crime they will do exactly fuck all.

PIGS are the reason criminals get away with so much, especially in WA. Just ask that bloke who's CBR was stolen. Cops don't do a thing. Anyone would think they were copping kickbacks off the gangs - actually - that's exactly what I think.

    Going back to steering locks.

My entire ignition barrel was smashed to pieces and a car key used to turn it on, apparently. I still haven't had a chance to look ver the bike but there is plastic and metal all over my carport where the bike once was.

Investing in one of these for future (Used to have one, paid it forward because I thought I didn't need it.. doh.)

If you have information that could lead to a conviction - follow it up! They probably won't come still, but keep following it up. And then, after they don't follow it up. Complain to the complaints line - of course, that's self-managed by cops, so it might not make much difference - but you need to at least try to get a result.

Lazy pigs won't do a thing without downward pressure.

Nah, then the pleb steals it, take it to the chop shop, gets a slap across the back of the head while everyone in the garage pisses on it, then get told to dump it somewhere and find a proper bike.
