    Require a Experienced eye!

Hey thier bike peoples found my self a little place where i might be very intrested in get my bike from and would like a some other people here if possible to run thier eye over it and give me some advice that is unbiased =).. ok ok the place is http://www.ultimatemotorcycles.com.au/ thier in Queensland and if been in contact with them thier offering me a CBR250RR MC22 model in the colors that i wanted for $7100 inc freight, and a free helmet, jacket gloves, and extreme road bike DVD, plus registration.

They are used bikes imported from Japan, new paint, tyres, brake pads, tuned and serviced. with a warranty too

This deal sounds a little too good and for my inexperienced eye i dont wana splash out the cash without being to sure .. So what do you guyz and galz think .

They probably havent been "Australian Complianced"... there's some cost to be incurred there.
    If you can... you MUST!

Have fun with warranty issues when buying from "far, far away"...

Not sure if it is worth it with big ticket items, especially ones with movable/breakable bits, like bikes.

    Just my $0.02

    Gday Deza,

I went through this whole ordeal when i was buying my cbr 250 rr, sure it seems you are getting a better bike for the same price you would pay over here but I would strongly recommend against buy a 10 year old bike sight unseen from people that you don't know, especially a bike like the cbr 250rr. Usually the bikes with this kind of paint job and history(or lack their of)are mockups of the real thing. Dealers buy sea containers full of spare parts from overseas(mainly Japan) and just build a bike up from the ground. The bike you buy may actually be several bikes. I am not saying you will definately be buying a lemon but if they are prepared to give you $1000 worth of safety gear and goodies that alone must make you think something must be suss. If you know someone over there who can look it over for you then do it. Even if it costs you $100 now it might save you 2 -3 grand down the track. A few people on this forum deal with eastern states wreckers and dealers every week so they might be able to give you more if not better advice.

Summary: make sure you do your home work and get someone you trust to look over the bike before you sign/agree to anything.

    Peace

For that price I think they would be - thats nearly the price you pay for them here.

Have you had a look at Import Motorcycle Centre I was seriously looking at getting a zx2r from them. The bike would have worked out to be $1-2,000 cheaper then you would be able to buy it for here including transport costs. The bike would have been fully complianced, new tyres, chain, sprockets, brake pads etc. with a warranty too . The guy was quite good to deal with. The only problem was that I couldnt wait a couple months to get one in the colour I wanted! I do believe that its not a case of finding the bike in the colours you want its more of a case of finding a bike and then they paint it for you - thats what the import mc dudes did.

What are the details on the helmet, jacket and gloves? Makes, styles, sizes? Im guessing it would be pretty cheap gear

Last time I was at Causeway there were a couple of brand new ZX2R's, dunno what the price was but it can't have been much more than 7 or 8k.

Maybe it might be worth asking around down there?

alot of bike mechanics do pre-purchase checks, not sure how you'd find one over their, just make sure its not real close to the bike shop, some people could be a little biased

    Hey deza,

I just had a bike over there inspected for me on saturday. I used Q-Check and the guy is great. $109 for an inspection, for that he spends about 1.5 hours looking over the bike and test rides it. When he is done he will fax you a report.

The guys name is John - 0403186303

    Deza,

One of my customers just did the same recently.

He purchased it from an ex east import company but I'm not sure who they were called. I will find out.

He and three of his mates purchased the same year and models you are looking at. They only paid $5000 though! And they had been given Austrlian Compliance.

I have seen his bike since as we fitted a Roo Pipe to it. The bike was immaculate and true to everything they described. He to had reservations about purchasing sight unseen but was more than happy once he received the bike.

I still think a pre inspection by a qualified mechanic is a good idea and $109 sounds like 'cheap piece of mind' to me.

Failing that we have both an 'imported CBR250RR' and an Australian Complianced CBR250RR for sale at Causeway Honda around the $6000 to $8000 mark respectively.

ive owned two imports, an FZR250 and a ZXR250. I dont recommend them. People (especially the ones selling them to you) will tell you parts are np, and ive always managed to get parts.. but it is usually eventually and a hassel.
km on Jap imports arent the same as km on australian bikes either. Jap driving conditions arent like ours, more short commuting trips in low gears. ive been told that 10000km on a jap import is more like 30000km on West Australian roads. My FZR's compression was shot, and it had 35000km on it.
I had serious problems with the discs on the ZXR, they were warped and i was told this isnt uncommon, and is caused by the way the bikes are stacked together in sea containers.
On the other hand they go much harder than say a VTR250 or CB250, and much better looking of course, but if you like that style of bike i would recommend the real thing and go for a nice RGV250. You can buy a lot of RGV for $7k and it will blow the socks of any 4stroke 250.

See what happens when your injured and stuck in bed.

Nothing else to do but read the forum and reply to various posts!

Gozer, I would have to agree with you in your opinion of 'imported' CBR250RR's as a general rule.

Thats why the Australian Complianced (not grey imported) is the CBR250RR to go for. Unfortunately you pay a litlle bit more for them though. They no longer sell them through Honda Australia. If they did they would be asking about $10,990 which is a little out of reach for most 'first' bike owners.

We are very selective on the 'grey imports' we trade due to the very reasons you mentioned.

Mentioned earlier in this thread was the ZX2R's that Prestige and Causeway Motorcycles have for sale.

If they have the same history as the two that were at Motorcycle City, they are awesome buys. These bikes are brand new, never licensed or ridden before. Apparently a few hundred were found in factory by Kawasaki laying dormant. Each dealer had the opportunity to buy a few for their stock.

I would have to disagree though on the RGV. They are getting a bit long in the tooth now and unless they have an extensive and comprehensive service history I would stay clear of them.

The majority of 'recent' purchasers that bring theirs into the shop for a service end up spending a lot more money than they anticipated due to worn piston and rings etc.

Seeing these bikes a 'race' bikes with licence plates, the servicing schedule on them is quite high and involved.

I do agree however that these things are pretty quick. My first 250 (1992)was a 1986 RZ250R which was the fastest production 250 in the world in its day.

Motor was fresh when I purchased her. I was 17 at the time, weighed no more than 60kg's wet! Thank goodness the 'hoon' law wasn't around then.
