    Riding in the heat

The next week will be around the 40 degree mark...

    Perth Forecast

What are your suggestions for riding in the searing heat?

Squiding is one, ice cubes down your draggins another....

Anything practical that you'd like to share?

...and NOT riding is not a valid option, as some have no other choice...

    Some interesting reading here:

I have a jacket with removable liners, I still wear my kevlar jeans, jacket, gloves and boots etc just no liners in my jacket with the zipper down a bit, the sleave zips open and try and choose a route with minimal stoppages (ie roundabouts insteed of traffic lights) as it's only when stopped it gets real hot

    Buy an air mesh jacket.

Keep hydrated, gatorade mix to water does help

Squiding works ok if your bike isn't like mine. Mine has the radiator exhaust onto your thigh so I end up with pink legs if I wear shorts. I usually take the car because the bike tries to cook me. A wet flannel perhaps?
Is such a thing even possible?

Used to use one of these water holding neck ties http://www.pryme.net.au/pdf/AllegroCoolOffNeckTies.PDF while working outside in summer, work clobber etc stock them (around $20 from memory). Would be good on a bike as there's greater airflow. Might try mine out on the bike tomorrow and report back.

If you put it in really cold water it works quite well. I used to put mine in cold water again at smoko and lunch to make it colder.

Also if you have a camelback half fill and freeze it then top up with water. Add a bit of powerade/gatorade to the mix if you're going to be out for ages and fill it up with water bottles from the servo if you stop for fuel.

Lightweight, wicking fabrics in light colours help a lot too.

Gutsy question. You're a shark. Sharks are winners, and they don't look back because they have no necks. Necks are for sheep.

    ive got one of these

COOLING VEST - ARCTIC HEAT USA Cool Vests - Cool Down Fire Up - Prevent Heat Stress with Ice Vests. Equine Ice Boots

You basically leave it in the freezer... then put it on under your jacket...

    lasts for a few hours...

got some sort of jelly stuuff in the pouches that freezes...

    works quite well..

That works until the air is hotter than your core temp, then you just de-hydrate quicker.

When you stop for fuel chuck your jacket in the ice box while you pay/wait for mates.

2L of water in the camelpack and nothing under my gear except a wet singlet. If I can position myself in the airflow so the wind goes down my jacket (which is slightly perfed) that wet singlet feels awesome. Gatorade and berroca are your friends, because you'll be flushing several litres of water a day out through your skin, so there's important stuff you need to put back. I get migraines if I get dehydrated, and that's really not fun on a ride.

Then when you come home you can tear off all your gear and make a sweat angel on the bed. It'll impress your partner no end.

I just squid, still get to my destination with my shirt dripping with sweat though..

When you're moving the air cools you down but when you're sitting at lights it sucks, especially with 105º air blowing on your leg from the radiator

You could get a mounting rack for a tail pack and fix a large parasol to it. This should provide ample protection from the sun's harmful rays, and only a moderate amount of looking stupid/having your bike steer like a boat until the parasol inevitably dislodges/breaks and causes someone serious injury (probably you).

Please note: This will do nothing to protect you from road conditioner, which tends to come as a direct result of councils aiming their sprinklers directly at the otherwise dry roads at this time of year.

Failing that, I hear mesh jackets offer some relief. Though if you have fair skin, are pron to burning, they will not offer the same protection as a solid jacket. Likewise if you have fair skin "squidding" may leave you looking more like a lobster.
