Riding In Winter?
A mate of mine sold his bike, because he didn't want to ride in winter.
Which is fair enough everyone has there own limits.
Just wondering does anyone else stop riding when winter comes?

No way.... I'll ride rain hail or shine! I'm cageless, and happy to be. One less financial drain.

I certainly wouldn't stop riding in winter (coming from the UK that's not much of a surprise!).
Few years ago I had to commute around 50 miles each way to work in London. There were a number of times when I was riding in snow with ice on the roads.

I wouldn't go to the extreme of selling it. I pick my days a bit in winter, but I have a cage so it's ok. I bought it as a toy and use it when I feel and not to commute. I ride in the rain from time to time but not often. Looking at getting a bunky to commute/practice wheelies. Not on public roads of course

^^ yup. Surprising how many ex-poms have girled up since moving to Perth, though.
I ride unless I need to cart stuff, then the cage is employed.

Obviously pick your days but not riding in winter means you miss all the extra light off shore winds instead of the summer time howling on shore.
Then there is the cold, clear winter nights when the air is nice and dense. The bike just has that little extra.
I love this time of year for riding.

I ride mostly in winter. Sometimes i get lazy and take the cage though, or i feel that leaving my cage in a car park is safer then my bike.

i used to have my bike as a toy (Ducati M900), had a company car and found it much easier to get to the other end dry in the car instead of soggy on the bike.
Now i ride everyday to and from work, wife has the car and i have a bike (2005 Kwaka Z1000). Morning like today the ride start great but by the time I get to work I can't feel my fingers. Even with winter gloves on!!! But the fact you on the bike more than makes up for any discomfort. You just have to take it very easy in the wet...

No disrespect to your mate, but if he sold his bike purely because he didn't like riding in winter, he can't have been much of a bike nut.
As for me, I ignore the weather and ride regardless.
Well, I don't completely ignore it. I will look at the forecast to see if i'll be needing my rain gear or thermals...it will need to be World War III outside for me to be put off riding and even then I'll still consider doing it unless my significant other or my mum badgers some sense into me

Meh... rain hail shine. The only thing that shits me is the couple of hours it takes to clean the bike back to its former glory after the rains.

im was just curious.
i get my bike next weekend and im tossing up if i should ride it in winter.
due to my lack of riding experience, its probably not the best of ideas.
wanted some opinions

i think half of perth's bike population hibernates for winter,
you only have to see all the bikes on the road when the sun comes out and disappear again when it gets a bit cold or wet

Mate it all comes down to confidence and riding to suit the conditions. If you're not confident about doing it...wait until you have some experience under your belt.

Same.
Get the right gear these days and you're pretty much set, though I always have cold hands in winter after a ride. It's no biggie.
I reckon riding in the wet actually sharpens your reflexes and teaches you more about riding the bike than in the dry. I love it.

Perth doesn't rain that much, i got my first bike in winter because all the 12 year olds sell their bike at the first whiff of cold or wet.
I honestly prefer riding in winter.
20 degrees + overcast = perfect.

I can understand people not wanting to ride in the rain/cold and that was my intention but i changed that tune when it dawned on me that if I don't ride in the rain if I ever got caught out I wouldn't know how to handle the bike etc so I just thought fuck it i'd rather ride in the rain and increase my road skills than get caught out and maybe fuck up because I shit myself when it started raining.
Every thursday and Friday is riding to work days for me no matter the weather. The missus goes past my work every day so its convenient for her to drop me off and pick me up on the other 3
