Saint’s Alive! … We’re Talking ‘Bout the BEST Motorcycle Café / bar in the business. Read On!
Eddie Preston from the Historic Competition Motorcycle Club of Western Australia had arranged to meet me in York with a group of his committee on Friday 4th April, to discuss possible sponsorship of the 2008 Australian Historic Road Racing Championships by the Wheatbelt Motorplex. I’d agreed to talk and we arranged to meet in York, then ride up to Dowerin (another 102ks) where I’d throw on a BBQ and we could talk the talk.
We met at York’s Gull service station and Eddie said they wanted to check out the new motorcycle café, (by the way, full marks to the lovely lady at Gull, who was quite happy to take a credit card for less than $10.00 of fuel). “Got me,” I said, “Never heard of one.”
“It’s apparently opposite the Shell garage in the main street,” he replied, so off we rode.
Let me tell you, Saint’s Diner in York, is fantastic. They weren’t open on the Friday morning (they do weekends), but readily agreed to open up for us to have a look and cranked up the cappuccino machine. Simon and Heather Saint have spent two years renovating the old cottage, turning it into a beautiful work of art, with a liquor licence, two small sheltered courtyards and a glorious beer garden out the back. There’s a couple of fountains – a traditional garden fountain and pond with Koi and a less traditional courtyard wall fountain, featuring a unique water feature … well, sort of! Heather reckons it’s modelled on Simon, he reckons she’s dreaming. I can’t compete, so I changed the topic. Then there’s the memorabilia all over the walls, not to mention the fabulous stained glass windows featuring motorcycles and the glorious fully restored Trumpy taking pride of place inside, mounted over the stairwell which leads down to the cavern bar.
Upstairs they have accommodation with rooms to make your partners weep with joy – the rooms look out over a balcony with a spa bath that even has a bar fridge. They also hire out motorbikes and arrange package tours for overseas and interstate enthusiasts. Their website is: www.wamotorcycleholidays.com.au Their email address is: saint100@bigpond.com and their telephone number is (08) 9641 2505. The street address is: 87 Avon Terrace, York.
It doesn’t matter whether or not you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, this is a classy, beautifully done café. It’s not to be missed and York is only an hour from Perth. As a suggestion, you could either ride (or drive) up via Toodyay and stop over for morning tea at the wonderful Cola Café (in Toodyay), then ride over to York for a long lunch. ‘Course, you could do it the other way round. Or better still, why not have a romantic weekend away – she’ll love you for it! Whatever you do, Saint’s Dinner is odds on to become Mecca for motorbike enthusiasts from one end of Oz to the other, it’s the best I’ve seen, anywhere! I've posted a number of photos of the place on my blog site, the album's called Saint's Diner York, if you go to Loconut - Perth WA news, friends, groups, local community, business directory then type in Greg Ross in the search engine, the blog site will come up and the albums are listed on the right.
The Wheatbelt Motorplex & The 2008 Australian Historic Road Racing Championships.
For those of you interested in motorsport, we then rode on up to Dowerin to inspect Amery Acres, where the Wheatbelt Motorplex is to be constructed. If you’d like to know more about this exciting project, please go to the Dowerin Field Days website: Dowerin Field Days - Dowerin GWN Machinery Field Days However, I’ve posted some photos of Amery Acres in the photo album which accompanies this story and the verdict from the racing boys, after they became the first people ever to “race” around the Wheatbelt Motorplex on road bikes – “This is going to be a great track,” “Very fast sweeping bends, like a shorter version of Philip Island,” “Tell Wil Croft he’s come up with something special, even in this preliminary form.”
The 2008 Australian Historic Road Racing Championships will be held at Barbagallo Raceway, over the period 21 / 22 / 23 November. For further information, please contact Eddie Preston on 9450 2888, or visit their website: www.historicracing.asn.au
Cheers
Greg Ross
