    Shorter oil filter???

Had a search with no success so I'll have to raid the brains trust again.

The gixxer ( K6 600 )has got after market headers on it that make it impossible to get the stock oil filter in and out without dropping them off the block. I only need bout 5-7 mm shorter than oem or a little narrower. Possibly well rounded on the corner away from the oil in and out might do it to.

Does anyone know of a oil filter that might fit the bill or am I just going to be stuck with a pain in the ass every time its due for a change?

I'll hazard a guess I'm not the first to find this headache!!!

Have you tried the header manufacturer on this out of curiosity? They would know they're causing grief and may have the solution.

at least it's only every 12,000 that you need to change the filter, there are heaps of filters out there, we use 4 different size filters for our bikes, work out the dimensions you need and try and source one that will fit the bill from K & N or similar

Nice thought but I don't know who made them. Apparently it was an ex Jap bike and not certain of it's history. Apparently it used to be a Yoshimura bike but not sure if it was a race bike, development bike or what. I only know who's had it after it arrived here. Not sure if that's even true but it goes good so don't really care. It's possible the headers are a custom job I just have no idea.

It's on the track bike so I'll be doing it way more than 12,000km but I don't do that many days so probably do it every 12 months. Have done it once and had to unbolt the radiator to get to the header bolts. 10 min job took me 2 hours.

Next change take the filter to a filter company and they'll match what you need.

I had similar issues with a filter once and used the US wix filters site to cross match against OEM and it gave several options with measurements I was then lucky enough that the perfect size had a part number cross reference on the Australian ryco site, a perfect match and available at supercheap to boot, if you're not that lucky you might still find a filter you can get from a US retailer such as Jake Wilson or similar

Wix, Donaldson etc have measurements on their websites.

Ryco would be my first start. Not sure if they do bike filters but I suspect they do.

Key the suzi number in and then change sizes to suit.

Ryco would be last on my list because their site doesn't give dimensions, list bike models or allow a search by thread or size like the wix site, I'm happy with the quality and availability though, so handy if the part number matches one of theirs.

Not sure about shorter, but try a K&N oil filter, they've got a thingo on the end which might make it a bit easier to get off.

+1 i tried a few avenues and drew the same blank, a cross reference of the wix part number on ryco's site gives you the Z444 which should be in most auto stores if you want to hold it side by side with your OEM filter and judge for yourself, in my case they were completely different sizes but still screwed on fine so good luck.

That SHOULD be just enough. I can get it loose just the last 3 turns it hits. I'll get back to you with the results in a couple of weeks when I get round to doing it.

    Cheers.

Both those are longer @ 3.022/3.031" than the std filter @ 2.782"

    Update.

Ryco Z444 arrive in the post this morning and although there is no reason at all not to use it I'm still going to need to drop the headers. Height at the outer edge where it hits is exactly the same ( give or take eyeball error ) side by side with the OEM and is a couple of mm taller in the middle.

Oh well guess I'll just have to keep dropping the headers. At least it goes good enough as payback for the pain in the ass!!!
