Swann Insurance opposes front plates

Not sure if it's a repost, but it's good news...(from Two Wheels Mag)

Wait.. did they say other drivers not giving way... over speed...

OMG

For such a major insurer to come out and say something like this is kinda impressive. It also indicates that they're shifting blame for any increase of insurance costs to the government.

but are they really a major insurer? When i think major, i think QBE, AAMI, Lloyds etc etc.

I really cant imagine this sort of statement is going to achieve anything positive for us.

Interesting read, and agree with above comment after being forced to play 'chicken' in a merge situation this morning, on Gt Eastern Hwy, at the Dom Airport lights, with a nugget in his fully siq lancer

this is great news to hear but will it work. i seriously doubt it. The government can only see $$$ signs here and couldn't give a fuck about anything else. i say make all MP's get their bike license and see what they say then.

+1. My point exactly. At least someone outside the biking community is taking a stand. It's a start.

rather then force a country wide change why dont the cops rather get speed cameras that take pics from the back rather than the front its basically punishing everybody for not doing anything wrong

Just a tip. Punctuation is something to embrace.

CGU, Swann... is IAG ( Insurance Australia Group )

Comprises SGIO, SGIC and the almighty NRMA..

Also includes RACV.. and has subsidiary companies in mainland china.. and also in england..

Not a small insurer by any standard - you just dont hear alot about CGU as it's a broker / business specific insurance line..

the bit about injury to pedestrians is wank. Someone getting hit by a bike is going to be injured nomatter what shape it is.
But I agree with the point about stability & airflow.
As for fitting a plate above the headlight, how easy would it be to just reach over & cover the plate with your hand when you see a speed camera? -Likewise for screen/bodywork decals.

Sucking up to policy holders, schmoozing to those who aren't. Numbers dwindling a bit lately, Swann?

The reason they always use that line is that back when bikes did have front numberplate (albeit lengthwise like a shark fin) the Coroner did find that the number plate was contributory to a pedestrian death.

This was back in the 80s or something.

yeh I'm familiar with the legend. One single case back in the dark ages. If it wasn't the plate it would have been something else.
Not enough of a basis for their case IMO. There are plenty more credible factors for standing against front plates without clutching at that particular straw every time.

Well this one is always going to get the blood boiling but they got rid of Front Number Plates for a reason all those years ago, yes they have been trialing another sort of plate but that doesn't accommodate all bikes produced. The cops in Vic already have cameras that have been setup to take from behind so there is nothing new in this area.
If they were to go down this track with number plates surely it would be cheaper to get the camera than paying for more number plates to be made up ( not that I want any of this to happen ) especially if they were only looking at the $$$$
If we do get cameras that take from behind well have a think about that one as the solution is very easy, the boys in the east have already given me the tip on how to avoid the fines .
