    U Turns at Traffic Lights?

    Hey guys,

Recently I've noticed some some people U turning at traffic light intersections when Im out and about at work. Is that legal?

I remember when living in another State and getting the book thrown at me for doing the exact same thing.

I thought there may be some folks on there who can shed some light on this...?

    Cheers!!

not allowed unless it is marked with U-turns permitted sign, think there are only a couple of those.

Illegal unless a sign specifically says it's permitted.

Like they said. An example of a legal u-turn at lights is Albany Highway and Manning in Cannington.

The right off Canning Bridge westbound seems to be a popular spot. About 60m after the sign that states "No U Turn Unless Permitted" (or similar).

Comes as a big surprise to those taking green onto Canning Bridge eastbound from Kintail.

As stated, illegal unless signed otherwise.

    Opposite for dual carriageways AFAIK.

When I see a no U turn sign on a D/C when I need to turn around
I just turn right into a driveway, reverse onto the road (look/signal)
and leave. Perfectly legal. This works for lights if your willing to drive
through the lights 50+ meters and possibly wait at the lights again.

Some intersections the fuzz light to camp out at for ppl pulling U-turns, one particular example is Gt Eastern Hwy in Midvale. Ppl come out of the Chinese/FishnChips etc and try to do a U-turn at the Farral Rd lights to go back up the highway towards Greenmount. But the Fuzz camp out at the BP/Liquor store and pounce on any unsuspecting victims (this was aided by the powers that be putting median strips most of the way down the highway for safety meaning the lights is the only place to turn around).

I've seen about 4 or 5 ppl get nabbed in that same spot over the years, seen the cops camped there between 7-8:30pm when the takeaways there are doing peak business too.

Personally ppl doing U-turns on main roads deserve no less than a booking, too many ppl do it in the wrong place at the wrong time when nobody else is expecting them to do it and it only leads to a lot of anchor grabbing and abuse.

u-turns are illegal within 35m of a traffic light, so if your gonna go through and then u-turn make sure you go far enough up the road

Being a hardened criminal, sometimes I perform u-turns at traffic lights when the road's empty... Sometimes I'll do it just to drive in circles between two sets of lights.

funny thing.. cops have speed cameras in front of popular intersections where people u-turn illegally.. speeding fines and defect notices seem easier to hand out than u-turns.. yet u-turns have a higher chance of accidents.. i've seen a very popular intersection where people u-turn illegally, it's very high volume traffic so i've seen a few accidents there because of this.. yet.... in 4 years i've never seen anyone given a fine for it, but heaps of people yellowed + speeding fine there...

Riverside drive & Barrack St is another one. If it is still there, I'll now have to go for a ride & check it out. Just another excuse to do the 270 freeway exit at the convention centre.
    Regards,

    Sooty.

    Another perfect day in paradise.

no its not illegal, it is against planning regulations to have a driveway that does not enable a turnaround for a forward gear exit from a property onto a b grade or higher road

I saw something like this as well, GEH Redcliff before the freeway turn off near the air port.

Guy tried to U-turn in a mini van, didn't make it around far enough and then had to reverse back down the road backwards toward on coming traffic (we had a green light as well) then tried to take off and didn't make it again. our light turned red before he'd even gotten out of the way.

really? wow I have never actually been told this before.
Does this count on all roads or just 'main' roads...sure it couldn't be like that for suburban streets?
