    Gozer: +6 Fender of babyslaying.

In other news, I've now mentioned the word 'babyslayer' to no less than 4 people that work in Traffic or traffic related departments in the last two days.

Soooooo, if you you buy a 2nd hand bike from a dealer that already has a slip on, new indicators and lets say a tinted front screen, does the shop supply you with the permit? Or are they selling you a defective vehicle? And who pays for them to be rectified?
Why me? I was being overtaken when you had the radar on me!!!

I honestly don't think it matters...
You could give it a crack and ask that the shop furnish you with a mod permit....
    Doubt they would though...

Having gone through this rigmarole with a car that I modified I can tell you that it is all a crock of shit so long as you follow some really common sense rules.

Now I dont know how much of this applies to bikes so bare with me.

Basically I built an 82 Datsun Stanza and i performed an engine mod = 2ltr turbo

Output had nothing to do with it. All that matted was that the physical engine capacity did not exceed 25% of original. 1600cc So the 2ltr motor was not a problem irrespective that it contained a hairdryer on the side.... so long as the boost level was factory, 7lb boost.

No mention was made of the engine mounting points in the form nor during the examination.... go figure

Made sure that I said that the brakes were standard issue, if anything is mentioned in this part of the form you MUST HAVE AN ENGINEERS CERT
Even though I had the bigger motor now with 5x more horsepower, it didnt seem to matter.... again, go figure... but I went with it anyway.

For me emissions control was not an issue so long as I had an EGR valve and Carbon Canister because the vehicle was pre 86. Neither of these were tested in the examination.

The vehicle was allowed to be driven in this modified state (even though technically it was illegal because it wasn't certified) to the licensing center for the examination because it was still currently road registered.... again go figure....

The simplest way to tackle any form of modifications is to go to the licensing center, option a vehicle modification form, fill it out, post it in and wait for the reply. So long as you haven't put in anything stupid (ie dont over inform them of what you have done) then you should get a reponse saying that you are good to go and you can now take your vehicle down to a licensing center for inspection.

Once inspected they give you a form that lists your modifcations and that the vehicle has been inspected. Keep this form with the vehicle so that when you get pulled over and grilled you can produce it and say.... vehicle has been certified as is, thankyou very much.

    There easy as pie.

Just make sure that when you are getting the inspection, even if you haven't listed it on your modification form, you mention minor things and get them to note it on your permit. Then you have nothing to worry about.

Mr plod will 90% of the time give you a yellow sticker because of your attitude and not your modifications.

    Hope this helps.

I've just brought a brand new bike, with mods to exhaust, rear sets, brakes, brake lines, fender eliminator, screen just to name a few. Guess that means im F@$%#@ when it comes to being pulled over then.

Or is the shop responsible ???

Just try and get a mod permit for it Lorenz..
    My plan of attack is:
    Get unstickered.
    Get permit.

Thanks for the info Browncow... compiling a list of modifications atm for the new CB.....

Would crash protection need to be listed as a modification? What about new mirrors... Where can i find out if a particular type of aftermarket mirror (bar end or otherwise) complies??

Hey Steeds, after doing a little reading there are a few things you don't need mod permits for - includes mirrors. (And venetian blinds)
    Modifications that don't require approval

Check the relevant sections of the ADR and VSR's.
I think mirrors need to be 250mm^2

A few years ago i had to take my modified Mazda RX7 over the pits. I paid my $20 and got a modification permit for the car, passed the pits, no worries.

The last thing the bloke at the pits said to me is that as soon as i leave the yard the mod permit is pretty much null and void- the police dont care about them as there is no way to prove the vehicle hasnt be modified again since the permit.

So i had a permit for an aftermarket exhaust that passed adr sound standards. But the cops could still ping me as i had no way to prove that it was the same exhaust and that it hadnt been modified since the permit was issued.

Now i believe engineers certificates are different, but i never got one so i wont try and comment.

Just something to think about as everyone used tot hink that permits were the bomb but the cops dont care. They will still sticker you, and youll still have to go over the pits to prove the vehicle is fine. Good luck getting your money back
