Seeing as we have been on the topic of safety in the last couple of days I thought I would bring up the subject once more on a less spoken about safety issue:

Riding noise... the not-so silent danger.
Permanent hearing damage can occur at 75db with as little as 30 minutes exposure.

Road and engine noise are not the usual culprit, it is the wind noise that causes the majority of the damage. Travelling at 80km/h on a motorcycle can easily produce sound levels above 75db from wind noise alone. Some helmets are quieter than others, yes, however no helmet protects you sufficiently to avoid permanent hearing loss.

The only real way around this is to invest in earplugs. I ride pretty much everywhere with mine. At under a dollar for a pair of comfortable earplugs its cheap compared to the loss of hearing in later life. Earplugs also reduces fatigue caused by auditory overload.

Many people spend mega $$$ on protective riding gear, yet one of the most important pieces of safety equipment is also one of the cheapest.

i as got me some wikkkkud earplugs from when i was doin labouring work. THey blok seriour amounts of noise (from brick saws) but still let the frequencies for speech come through enought to be able to hear.

My arai lid is bloody noisy over 80km. My daily ride is about 15min on 100km/h and i value my hearing.

Go the plugs.

My earplugs are NRR32 (Highest rating for soft foam earplugs) and I can still hear everything around me just fine, its a little quieter but sirens etc are still audible.

If anyone wants to try a pair of the earplugs I use, just let me know... I buy them by the boxfull.

Its never too late to save the hearing you have left. I have tinitus (constant ringing in the ears) from my last job, my hearing isnt great, but it COULD get a lot worse!

I'd have to agree with Klink here, albeit I only wear plugs on country runs or when I know I'm doing more than just a blat down to Scarbs.

If anyone remembers my zx-12r. Goddamn that had a loud pipe on it. I used to wear plugs on that all the time.

Atkins Carlyle or Coventrys we buy em from there for work. Any safety place will sell em also eg Sling rig Kewdale, Protector Safety.

These are the ones I use, they are so soft and comfortable, barely even realise you are wearing them. I can get great prices for these over the net.

As of next week Causeway Honda will be selling ear plugs. they come in a case so you won't lose them and have a place to put them when you take them out.
