    Who's done R class test of R6, R1, GSXR 600, 750 etc

    Hey guys,

Ive got my R class test on monday and im not to bad with O turns but im damn worried the assessor is going to get me to do one on a standard street where i feel i wont be able to do it, i can do them on a wider road(like industrial area). I got taken to where they can sometimes make you do your O turns but i failed horribly and thats got me concerned. This area had loose stones on the roadside with a small drop off either side just to add to the intimidation factor Yet when i was practising on an industrial road in maddington during a lesson i was doing well!

Ive got a couple more lessons before monday to get more confidence/skills but i was wondering who has done their R class test on a Sportsbike? i.e R1, GSXR1000 CBR etc and how did you find the O turns and did the assessor factor in the larger turning circle?

    Cheers guys

    Ash

yes they factor it in and they will let you do it on a wider street. talk to assessor about it.

    Did mine on the R1.

For Oturns I had to move my butt over to the left side of the seat and practically throttle with my fingertips so I could go "full-lock" to the right without wedging my fingers between the tank and the clip-on. That technique allowed me to do it within the confines of a "normal street (6m IIRC???) during lessons.

However, my assessor factored it in. He literally pulled up next to me out the front of Joondalup and said "oh, you're on a sports bike...Ok we'll go to Neil Hawkins Park carpark instead of where I normally go". So it was a piece of piiss.

He told me he wasn't too troubled by the size of my Os and that he was more concerned with my control.

Why not just pay for an instructors bike? I am doing mine on a gs500, stupidly easy to 0 turn on. Will be $60, cheaper than paying for another test after failing the first one from doing it on a sports bike...

because I never planned on failing on my bike. If you can't execute an O/U-turn on the bike you'll be riding everyday then perhaps you aren't ready for that licence yet.

IMO, using an instructor's bike that is easier is a cop out.

Fair enough. I have a '99 R6, I've booked a test and am doing it on the instructers GS500. I can 0 turn on my R6, but I like my chances of passing on the GS500 better, so thats the way to go.

Goodluck with your test Ashmo, hope you find the insight you're after

go to a car park and do like half an hour of u turns.

little hint, dont ever hit full lock, it wont let u stand the bike up if it starts to fall.

thats the plan over the coming days/ lessons just practise O turn after O turn as i feel the rest of my riding and e-stops are good enough to pass.

I did mine on a gixxer 750. Failed the first time because she gave me a normal residental street then gave me a second chance in a car park, which of course is piece of.

I nearly failed because it pulled up too quick and an inch too short on the e-brake. They kind of expect you you to pull up within a certain distance, not on a 50c piece
Whichever bike you take, just be sure you'vre practised over and over. As long as you look like your in control, you should be right.

    Good luck

Did it on an 06 ZX-6R. It's tedious, but just go to a carpark for half an hour or an hour, start doing some big lazy circles and gradually tighten them up until you can do it on demand, no problem.

I did my R class test at city west. pulled into a ridiculously wide street and the dude said, use as much or as little of the road as you want/need to. 'tis more about control rather than your ability to turn a bike in a confined space... it's splitting hairs as to whether you can o-turn your bike in a 10m wide street vs a 12m wide street. I know this doesn't help you out if your assessor is a stickler for the rules tho
    meh...

Don't let the bike drop, or get more muscle...

It's a matter of progressively working down to full lock, as opposed to attempting it from the word go.

Where Orson did o-turns with the bizarre contortion that the Yamaha sports require to turn on the road, when I had my R1 I used less handle bar movement and more lean rather than buggering about full lock/throttle. Problem with that method is the greater lean angle requires more speed which isn't suitable for the assessment - o-turns must be done at a "walking pace" ~5km/hr. Of course, that's only an issue in a fairly narrow suburban street like my own. If you're doing the assessment in one of the suburbs with good, wide streets you don't need full lock or lean even on an R1 or the likes.

I did my R class on my R1, and practiced 'O' turns out the front of my house a few times, But never went near full lock! I found droppping the bike in a little quicker (earlier) than you would normally made it very easy to do, using the throttle to bring you back up. On the day was a bit stressed i have to admit, so my gorgeous shadow Jess and i went to the street where they take you, i practiced there for about 30mins, until i was nailing evey 'O' turn in that little street. I was stoked to know that i could do it there and gave me the confidence i needed to get me through the test. However when we walked towards my bike, she said "Oh you have your supersport for the test, we'll just do the E stop first, and then go to the carpark for some O turns" Sweet in the bag, but i was happy to know i could do them anywhere.

Practice buddy and look where you want to go, forget about those little stones and stop looking at the ground

Did mine on my old R1, O turns were easy, main thing that was hard was trying to stay on the speed limit in the 50km/hr zones, kept wanting to creep over

If you hit full lock, speed up.
    Definately don't slow down.
