    Yamaha key code lost

I am thinking of buying a yamaha R6 and the owner only have 1 black key and a red key. He has misplaced the silver tag with the key code. Is there a way to find out the code? I am going to get a blank key and make up a spare one incase I loose the only black key.

Is the code an actual immobiliser code or code used to cut a spare key without an original key?

Can I take the blank key to any key cutters and have it copied? I found instructions on another forum on how to code the new transponder using the red key. I am trying to save some money if I can by diy coding a new black key.

As long as you dont lose the red key your sweet, you need to program both black keys at the same time.

    1. Insert the red key into the ignition and turn it to "ON". The immobilizer indicator light should come on for 1 second and then go off.
    2. With the red key still in the ignition, start the engine.
    3. Shut off the engine and remove the red key. The immobilizer indicator light should start to blink after 30 seconds.
    4. Insert the red key into the ignition and turn it to "ON", then "OFF" and then remove the key within 5 seconds.
    5. Insert the black key into the ignition and turn it to "ON" within 5 seconds.
    6. While the immobilizer indicator light is flashing, turn the black key to "OFF" and then remove the key.
    7. Insert the next black key, turn it to "ON"
    8. Wait for the immobilizer indicator light to stop flashing, turn it to "OFF"
    9. If everything went OK, then you can use the both black key to start the engine.

That's the instruction I found on R6 forum.

Do I need to recode the black key that's currently working as well?

I am adding new spare key so I assume I only need to code the new key.

Have you tested the instruction and did it work for you?
