Double Demerits Christmas/New Year reminder. STARTING MIDNIGHT TONIGHT

Just a friendly/early reminder: The "Christmas/New Year" double demerit points period will be running...

    Fri 18th Dec 2009 – Sun 3rd Jan 2010

Double Demerits - Office of Road and Safety

The Double Demerit Points initiative in relation to speeding, drink driving and nonuse of seatbelt offences will continue in Western Australia on long weekends and holiday periods. This does not include doubling the fines for these offences (ie. there is no “revenue raising”).
A few of you have been pulled over recently for allegedly exceeding the speed limit, perhaps in some cases related to the "pre-Christmas blitz" they're bragging about lately. Just remember over the coming weeks and particularly during the double demerit period there will be more visible major police anti-speeding/drink driving setups, which in turn will probably lead to more police issuing yellow stickers.

I'm not going to tell anyone to slow down, drive/ride carefully, always wear your gear. Those are decisions you need to make for yourselves. Just nice to have the information easily accessible, given it's not generally well advertised.

Cheers Ryven. Any idea whether the dates are likely to be the same nationwide, or different in different states?

They usually vary from state to state as do the penalties

Yep, couldn't comment on Tasmania. Haven't looked into any other states.

Edit: Just looked. The Taswegians are even further behind than us. As far as I can see, they're still only looking at trialling double demerit points. So, at a guess, nothing to worry about, at least for this year.

    http://www.themercury.com.au/article...ania-news.html May be of interest...

The double demerit periods would cover speeding, reckless driving, not wearing a seat belt, not wearing a motorcycle helmet and illegally riding in the back of utilities and trucks.
Makes me wonder... I don't remember the last time I've seen someone travelling in the tray of a ute on a gazetted road... Tasmania for most bogan state?

Yeah, I got pinged for riding in the back of a ute in Lancelin. Originally the ute was pulled over because the driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Nice enough cop; he didn't ping me for street drinking too!

I don't mind the double demerit campaigns, they clearly aren't revenue raising (any more than usual). I still think speeding is punished way too harshly already, but double demerits is a safety effort I support as it doesn't focus on money.
Is such a thing even possible?

As silly as it might seem...can you imagine the fist-thumping etc that would go on in Police HQ if all drivers in WA obeyed speed limits for say 2 weeks and no infringement notices were issued??? They'd be looking for someone to blame!!! I said it was silly....

    Considering how I normally ride...
The universe likes speed. Don't delay. Don't second guess. Don't doubt. When the opportunity is there, when the impulse is there, when the intuitive nudge from within is there, act.

We all know they can invent infringements for quotas, they've been at it for a long time and are quite good at it.

But with the average Perth driver, they don't often need to resort to that.
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

I was under the impression NSW have Double Demerits in place for the whole of December and most of January... I know they were already in place when i was driving from Canberra to Brisbane a few weeks ago.

WA's shorter Double Demerit period could actually be a GOOD thing where we are behind other states for a change

    Thanks, I completely forgot...

Before I could afford to accrue only one point, now I can afford none - damn double demerits wrecking my double or nothing... that quadrupley shit.

Time to stick to the actual limit, not 10kmh over - this is going to kill me for the short trips to the shops

just so you know, 10kph is 2 demerits normally.

so even for double or nothing, 10kph over is bye bye licence
As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.

0-9 kmh, I meant... to get all technical... but yes, you are correct

    I'll stick in the 0 - 9 kmh bracket
