Out of curiosity, any Singaporeans here care to comment on the cost of 1) getting a license, 2) keeping that license and 3) getting a car registered in Singapore?

And don't say it'll never go up: I remember when the fastest bit of the freeway was a 90 zone. It wasn't that long ago...

Ok i mean getting your second phase. You have to do a practical driving exam and its fuking hard. Theres like a thousand stupid things to remember.

EDIT: Also its not just a matter of doing a test, getting ur log book, write down shit and ur done. You have to first do the test (yer easy) once ur 16 1/2 u can go for ur driving exam although if u dont do at least 5 lessons before hand ur pretty likely to fail unless ur parents are driving instructors themselves so theres more money ($50 a lesson). Then the actual exam then 25 hours for 6 months then u do the hazard perception test and finally u get ur P's. Everything after the test is easy but the test is pretty dam hard. If u havent done it in the past 3 or so years you cant really comment.

The test is pretty hard, but it's really in the wrong areas. The bike test goes a little further than the car one, but still isnt enough about road safety really.

Ask most people what ABS does and they'll tell you it makes you stop quicker.
People have no idea how their cars even work.

    Good segment.

Not if you can actually ride!!! If they don't feel you are safe they wont pass you and I for one commend them on that.

I'm not saying that getting over your nerves is easy but all you have to do is demonstrate that you can put the road rules in to practice, show that you have control over the bike at slow seed - any fool can ride fast in a straight line - and stop quickly if a dangerous situation presents itself.

I for one am glad that these skills are tested as I have had to demonstrate them in day to day riding.

If you can't pass the test I'd prefer that you weren't on the road !!!!!!

Driving is a difficult thing to do, there are so many variables, and frankly we are operating at speeds we were not designed for. These skills take time to develop, that's why there has been the focus on slowing down the whole process via log books etc.

But I bet you haven't ever learned basic defensive driving techniques. Can you control the car when swerving around an object? What about if your car goes into a slide in the wet? I'm not even going to go into passive safety techniques, developing situational awareness and anticipating traffic.

Complaining about the difficulty of the test to me is laughable. A fresh drivers licence is a truly terrifying thing to me, especially when the holder thinks they can now drive to an acceptable standard.

if the limit was made 140kph those that currently drive at 140 along the freeway would probably drive at 180. the only reason they dont goto the cars limits is they are scared of getting hoon lawed. we are better off having an elite squad of camera spoilers. they put a big sign up 1km before the speed camera alerting everyone that its there.

I think if the limit was raised to 140 you would still get a few people going faster, but many people would still drive at the speed at which they do atm. I wouldnt be at all surprised if the number of speeding fines issued actually decreased with this change

Yeah. I finish work at 4am, and i'll do 130-140ish down a nearly empty freeway to get home sometimes. If the limit was 140 i dont think i'd go much faster.

I'm Singaporean but got my license here rather than in singapore.
1)I only know that its much more expensive there because you need a certified instructor instead of the 4year thing we have here. Not sure about the prices for lessons but it won't be cheaper than what it is here.

    2)Don't know.

    3) Crazy expensive for the on road taxes plus ERP gantries (Toll into the CBD).

And if i'm not wrong its still 90 for the highways? no "freeways" although the only time you would be able to reach those speeds is maybe between 9pm-6am?

I for one do not want to drive there because of the drivers (same quality of bad drivers just an increased quantity) and plus its no fun.

Yes, yes they can comment, by the sounds of it, you shouldn't be on the road. Those stupid little things that you need to remember at one stage or another will save your life, and for every one that they test you on, there is another 5 that are just as important that they don't

the train does like 140, so you have to do just over to stay in front.

if you can't meet the requirements in the test situation; what will you be like when no one is sitting next to you marking down your mistakes? I had to resit my tests after thinking I had gotten out of hoon charges by admitting to careless driving but ended up losing the licence anyway. Second time around, zero errors and I wasn't even concentrating on not making a mistake, we were chatting too much about what the best adventure bike is. To the point that I forgot I was in the middle of the left something behind drill and drove straight past the house.

The driving test is easier than your average maths test in school.

In the car test, a lot of the 'stupid little things' are just that, and they're irrelevant. Like indicating too early or not checking your blind spot on a completely empty road. Not gonna kill anyone.

The test is easy when you've been driving for a while and everything has become second nature. It can be a bit tricky first up, especially when you don't know all the little things that they look for. I'd say its a lot easier than an average maths test, but i'm very good at maths.

Not just better driver education but better roads.

I am not sure how the government would approach the German practice of subsidising the purchase of cars with cutting edge safety features as well.
More of a pipe dream I think however some creative thinking would be needed. Higher licencing costs for older vehicles?

Come to think of it what would be better education? Skidpan? Tuning sessions for new car drivers?

Dude. I have a license for pretty much anything that can be driven (except Pilot) and I have never sat a test for anything twice. You will find there are probably many who pass first time. They just aren't whinging so it's coming to your attention less than people failing. If you are skilled enough to meet the criteria, you pass the test. It's not their fault if you rock up and aren't up to scratch. Being nervous isn't really an excuse either. We are dealing with machines that can be fatal if you aren't up to the task.

Honestly the tests should be harder.
