I've done some traffic management overseas and the first thing I was taught was that you should only control speeds for as short a period as possible, since impatient motorists tend to get on the gas as they exit the controlled area, causing accidents

It would be interesting to see if any more accidents happen within 5 km of the last camera

How is accelerating traffic more likely to cause accidents than traffic slowing for no good reason?

aggressive passing, lane changing, trying to make up for lost time...

I'm not saying it's any more dangerous than people slowing for no good reason, but it is a recognized problem. I had a close one last year exiting a speed restricted area - a guy in the inside lane was pushing out to pass cars that were still on the limit and nearly sent me into the central barrier

Yeah I agree, I've seen it quite a bit recently along the Ocean Reef Road extension in Landsdale A few weeks back I was in the car with the missus and the she was doing ~50-55#&% in the 40kmh zone and there was a Triton 4wd riding her arse until it went back to double lanes, then it ducked out and roared off and chopped lanes between traffic ahead of us The road being restricted to 1 lane and 40kmh was stupid but the missus was worried there may have been cops around as she had seen them there previously and there was no need for the dangerous driving

How is that making our roads safter?
I reckon it is dangerous, that we are having to take our eyes off the road to continually check our speeds, I can remember when I forst started driving the cops were on the roads everywhere, most of the time they would pull up next to you and give you the slow down sign and move on. To me back then as a fresh driver was a big a wake up call

    So I AM experienced.

If I'm going down Greenmount in a truck, sure, speed control is pretty damn important, and you should be vigilant keeping the vehicle under control.
Lives can and have depended on it.
But, fluctuating speed by 5-10kms over a few 'whoops' in the road for maybe 30 seconds while the vehicle 'settles' and being penalised? FFS.
Am I out of control of my vehicle?
That's just a fkn money grab.

I'm safer driving my car with those fluctuations, and my complete attention to the road, my surroundings and hazards, than someone doing half the speed, watching their damn speedo, scared of being penalised for creeping an absurd and death defying, 5kph over the limit, for the length of time it takes to say, "WA traffic legislations are a bad, fucking joke."
Those fluctuations may cause some accidents, but they are not the major cause of accidents and / or deaths.

Like has been said earlier, if so many people are breaking the limit, the limit/legislation needs to be re-evaluated.

    Money grab
Yeah I got pinged for 4 over the limit, $75 no points but that is just plain stupid, I am fairly certain that 4 over the limit is not that dangerous, yet I have seen a cop car get passed by a ute doing at least ten over and nothing.

Less serious now, I wonder if anyone has chucked a brownie when a mate has gone past over the limit? I can see the look on the dudes face, expecting to see a car and HOLY FREAKING FUCKBALLS!!!

worst ive seen cops sitting on the overpass getting people speeding down kwinana freeway yet to get this car they were doing atleast 130-140k in the emergency lane then crossed straight over into the right lane finally catching up to get the car for doing 10k over (freeway was packed).

another note though ive sat behind a plain cop car doing 20ks over down the freeway without any issues (they way it should be),

I like their so called validation for more camera's. The Sunday times this morning put this:
Data shows the number of speeding drivers dropped from 22,308 a week during the initial testing period in mid-December to 14,084 in late January proving the success of the trial.

Can they qualify it by showing a reduction in accidents... I mean if the speeding dropped by so much surely the accidents did in the same period right?

that data is not available, comparing the crash data for a similar time period would involve dividing by zero and the world as we know it would collapse.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.

It is really the job of the dopey Perth media to ask a few simple questions and confirm what everyone already suspects.

That there were no / few accidents before the camera went in and that there have been no / few accidents after.
That there are less people getting caught because they know where the camera is.

It would be good if the dopey Perth media looked into whether it was ever justified to have a fixed speed camera on an open freeway and, having confirmed if that is the case, what actual impact it is having on reducing accidents.

Nah the Perth media are too busy comparing grocery prices in different suburbs to care about doing anything useful, cause you know that saving of a few $$ is worth the extra 10-20km distance to go and get...

So according to the latest stats.
78,723 caught, of these 75,200 for less then 10 km/h. So over 95% of all people they have caught received no demerit points, but copped a $75 fine..
