Lightpole ON the road, death trap for motorbike?

What will they say if a biker hits this and dies? Bollards 4m before the pole probably won't save you.

There was a similar situation in Broadway in Nedlands when they put a row of new light poles down the middle of the road, but there were no median strips or anything around the poles, so it was just road....then a pole without warning. Was a bit of a disgrace really, but not all that surprising.

That's a deathtrap for everyone, not just bikers.

That's pathetic. They could remove that in an hour if they wanted to but "a few weeks"? Someone needs to be fired over that job.

Don't worry about it, there is nothing unusual about this sort of thing happening when the Mandurah Council's planning dept is involved.

was in a car once on an unlit road, someone decided that pulling a metal ornamental one across the entire width was a smart idea..

we hit it about 80k/h and almost rolled it..

happy to say we all walked away.. but it was pretty hairy..

quite similar to the light pole on Mortimer road, when they first realigned it with the train line they had the pole 2 meters into the left lane of eastbound traffic, bitumen around it, and 2 cones marking it. i think i sucked about 4 foot of seat cover material up my arse the first time i found that coming around the bend at night after someone had taken the cones......

Happened to one or two power poles out the front of the new Kalamunda Glades shopping centre when Canning Road was widened a few years ago. The road was widened before the poles were moved, so what else could they do but build the road around the poles.

Light poles in the road like that are a prime example of what's going wrong in Australia. Hell it was years ago that I got a pile of pics in an email of "life in S.Africa", you know the pic with the farmers dog in the passenger seat of the ute (bakky) and the black guy in the tray, blacks with fishing lines in a giant pot hole and a picture of a new development with a T junction and a light pole just about in the middle of the terminating road. Bloody hell.

Sitting about a metre from the kerb of the Gordon Rd-Mandurah Rd intersection
Gordon Road doesn't intersect Mandurah Road. Journalism FAIL

I wonder if they will bother to put lights on the warning barriers? Warning signs for a few hundred metres up Gordon Road? How easy is it for the local bogans to remove the warning barrier as a "prank"?

i agree- somewhere, someone who is lazy and useless is responsible for making that job more expensive, inefficient and dangerous to the public.

1. they have to close hte road again when they pull it out.

2. pulling it out is going to be harder, more time consuming and expensive now its buried in asphalt.

3. they are going to have to chop up the new road and then repair the damage.

4. its a traffic hazard every moment its sitting there.

Yes it sucks that its there, but you should be looking where you're going.

If you cant see around a corner (that one has plenty of visibility) then you shouldn't be going so fast (where so fast = relative to your abilities - if you're not capable of taking evasive action at 60, then guess what...) that if something unexpectedly crops up you're fucked.

edit:
There's a couple like this in Canning Vale... you have to ask how the fuck it happened...

But thro, you've just diminished the excuse that thousands of drivers use for rear-ending cars and bikes at give way signs all over the country.

"How was I supposed to know there was a car stopped in front of me, officer? I was too busy giving way!"

Big roundabout out the back of Kwinana... used to have something similar... didn't take to long for the design to be 'modified' by an unsuspecting motorist.

This is W.A. a state that can't even grasp the concept of daylight saving and de-restricted trading hours... I'm more surprised that some one noticed it at all..

I like the fact the bitumised around the light, even after realising its in the wrong spot!!!

Sounds like the usual case of "Its not my problem I'm only doing what I've been asked!"

IMO they should close the road and put up a detour.

Then close their minds and give them a lobotomy

Woops they have already done the second one

Yes, they can.

I'll go get a photo of a similar one tonight if it stops raining about 1km up the road from my place (canning vale).

Its a typical symptom of the whole "not my problem" apathy that is plaguing society as of late.
