Aaah the great hoon red herring. The punters and grey-power brigade has certainly fallen for this one, hook, line and sinker. I bet most of them post on PerthNow too.
You see, the oldies and doo-gooders get uptight about 'hoons' and their 'hooning' and because the oldies and doo-gooders have a majority vote, they're going to vote for someone who is seen to be doing something about the 'hoon problem'. Nanny-state Labor, who sees 'hooning' as a greater offence than manslaughter or unlawful killing, have pounced on this overrated, contrived "threat to public safety" and know dam well that that grey-power and doo-gooder vote is very powerful and could mean the difference between getting re-elected and not.

>sigh<
Up until now, the relationship between hooning and serious injury/death has been tenuous at best.
This will change, I reckon, as more and more people react to the disco lights by doing a runner and wiping themselves out. Death or injury due to being a hoon.

Anywhere that's not residential - it's not that hard. Cutting up in front of someones house at 1 in the morning doesn't work & I certainly don't have any sympathy for anyone who gets caught doing it. Back in the day (I know, I know) myself & mates never did it, we used to head out of town or cut up the commercial areas. We were always worried that some grumpy old fuck would come out of his house, drag us out of the car & beat us sensless if we got caught.

Since our anti-hoon laws were introduced in 2004, more than 2,800 drivers have been removed for acting recklessly on our roads for the safety of the public," he said.

Why has the road toll continued to rise?

I vaguely remember that, although the road toll is steadily increasing, when you look at deaths/serious injury vs total number of registered vehicles it's steadily dropping.
So despite our whining and whingeing, apparently one or more of the initiatives being employed are actually having effect.
Whether this is "go hard on speeders", more stringent training regimes for learners, speed cameras, booze buses or hoon laws is difficult to tell - way too many variables conflicting or enhancing each other there.
Understandable though - even if "hooning" sans speeding (ie burnouts, drifting, wheelies, stoppies etc) never caused a single injury, they are a blatant demonstration of not-being-joe-average-drone-on-his-way-from-a-to-b road use.
For the average idiot getting butt fucked for doing 12km/h over the limit, to then see someone pop a wheelie doesn't seem fair. So let's take the spotlight off our broad policy of low level rape for folk who slide a fraction of a centimetre on the accelerator by sensationalising the apprehension of these mass murderers who slip around a corner a bit. That way we keep the rape on, and still get voted in again.

SD - from what I hear, (ie not reliable), July 1 saw the introduction of "double or nothing" and the demise of the extraordinary license.
SPMan - yup. The list goes on. But something seems to be working. Although we PSBers tend to foam at the mouth about the cockholsters in the ORS, blah blah blah, we're just as bad as they are at picking those statistics which are convenient to our opinions.

Because people aren't learning car control in a *relatively* safe manner at 2am by hooning.
You heard it here first

It applies only to licenses lost for demerit point suspension. You can still get one after being convicted for drink driving

that reminds me of when i first got my license.
i can remember heading down with mates to where they were building the Kwinana Fwy extensions and they had the limestone graveled access roads.
we used to practice doing 180 degree reverse to forward and forward to reverse turns plus donuts ect. at the time we never did these things do improve our driving we just did them because they were fun.
i am sure those days have contributed heaps to my being a safe driver now, ive not spun out and been facing the wrong way in years!
