Rider Down Mitchell North 6pm 24/05/12

Rider on a red 1999ish GPX250 came off on the Mitchell northbound just before the Hepburn ave exit.
He was splitting down traffic when a guy in front of him indicated and changed lanes.
He was doing about 60kph whilst traffic was going 40kph.
Braked hard to miss the lane changer. Front will locked up and bike slid on its right side.

Rider apparently has a bashed up knee and a sprained wrist. Bike has mostly cosmetic damage. Probably need a new indicator and rear brake pedal.

Rider is from Carramar. If you're on here hope all is ok.

A good reason not to split through moving traffic (except possibly if it's at walking speed), IMHO.
    Just saying.

Speaking from your years of experience?

    And you too?

Splitting moving traffic is not a death trap. Riding beyond your capabilities is. So is not knowing how traffic acts on certain areas of road. I split that freeway at pace regularly. There are areas, that being one of them, that are notorious for cars jumping lanes without looking because they are trying to merge into gaps that are only half there. Learn to know where those stretches of road are and adjust your riding accordingly. Practice braking at various different speeds on quiet roads so you are confident of your stopping distances at those speeds. Know how to threshold brake without locking up your front wheel.

Splitting is not a death trap. Not knowing how to read traffic or operate your motorcycle efficiently can be.

He was probably obsessing in his rear-view mirrors in case a PSBer came up behind him and demand that he move over immediately.

Yep, that spot in particular needs plenty of caution. Drivers haven't got a clue how to handle it, so best to assume they are going to do the unexpected... don't hang about near a gap.

Sorry i should have been clearer with what i was stating that in responce to.
That part of the road is a death trap.
I split of the freeway on a daily basis but always make sure whatever speed i'm splitting at i usually slow down coming up to the hepburn merge, because i know cars change lanes without doing any real cheeks other than is there a 1.5m gap between cars to the right/left of me.

Splitting in Perth is risky. Drivers see any gap and go for it. Rat myt be invincible due to all his knowledge and experience. But for me, I honestly think it is simply a roll of the dice. We are riding amongst many of the least skilled drivers I have seen. Some days I choose to split but rarely am I running late. Why take these risks every day if u don't need to?

Riding a motorcycle is risky, any rider who thinks otherwise would be best advised to use public transport.
Rat750 is well aware he is not invincible, nor is anybody on here.
His point is simply about minimising those risks and gaining enough experience to handle any given situation.
Lets be honest, the thrill of riding has always carried some degree of risk and that is where the fun lies....

Yes, I said it was risky. Rat didn't give any indication he thought he wasn't invincible. In fact, to split at speed suggests he may be confused about his invincibility.

Actually no. Why are you making it this personal? My post was a lighthearted response, nothing more.
