- The West Australian Premier, Alan Carpenter, eager to capitilse on the recent instability of the opposition during a time when his government couldn't be trusted to run a bath and in a vain attempt to cling to power, will call an election this afternoon.

I'm not actually sure this is such a good idea from Carps. People may well see this as a low blow by trying to capitalise on the Lib's problems.
Having said that, the Libs are non-existent so they wont pose much threat.

Considering last night several political analists* on just about every station stated it'd be probably the worst move Craps could make, I'm not surpirsed.
Let's face it though, it's like spinning a roulette wheel full of "00"s.

Calling an election when the opposition is in disarray is well above the belt shmoo. Hardly dirty politics.

And if they do? I doubt it's going to drive any Labor supporters into the arms of the Liberals. If Carps had really wanted to put the boot in he would have called it when all of Buswell's dirty laundry first came out - the Libs would have instantly self-immolated like an angsty 14yo goth to the cheers of the crowd.
If any die-hard lefties feel they can't vote for Labor directly, they'll probably go to the Greens (as if the die-hard lefties haven't already) and preference Labor above Liberal, leaving Labor with an effectively unchanged position. And so on ad nauseum until everyone stops assuming that there's only two parties you can vote for.

I'll pay the $50 to sit this one out. This is first time I've ever considered it.

Yeah I've considered doing the same, as I think the current Labour government is the worst government we've had in WA in recent memory, and the Liberals aren't really offering an alternative.
That being said I'll probably vote Liberal knowing full well they can't win (and not that I'd really want them too), but its more of a protest against Labour that doesn't give them any preferences, without having to cough up $50.

Vote for every whacko two-bit independent candidate you can find. It'll encourage them, they put their names up even though they probably have NFI about government and why should the major parties have the market cornered on that?
For your last two preferences you flip a coin for the two major parties. Just as useful, and you just saved $50.

If you dislike the two party dominance of the system, why not protest-vote for another candidate instead of just defaulting to the Liberals? Put someone else first, then Liberal second (in your case). That way the other candidates get a boost to their primary vote at the expense of Labor, but Labor still don't get your preference down the line.

I think you'll find its the Australian Electoral Commission who decide on the boundaries and its based on population. The political parties have nothing to do with it.
