Smile 05/06 CBR600 barbs gearing + track advise set up for 95kg rider

    Hey all ...

I've just brought a 5/8/2005 CBR600RR with 6599kms on the clock .Bone stock

Bike is goin to be a dedicated track tool . Goal atm is Looking at a year of as many track days then start racing .

Bike has just been brought from over east . Guy was using it as a track day bike but not racing .
Bike had a minor low side with the original fairings . No engine case scratches just the usual fairing scuffs whilst he ran it in on the road . Bike came with
    -all road gear
    -rear sets
    - set of race glass
    - genuine paper work / first regoed mid 06 and 1 owner . + first service in log book

bikes been used as a track bike ever since and rego ran out
Never had a fall at the track . Bikes been to all the usual philip island and popular melbourn tracks ! Wankers!! Tyres are well scuffed so although he is 55 and played the old man card he certainly can ride !

Bike seems to hold true to every thing he's said .as their isn't any real damage and stock parts are well track used to have been replaced for sale .

Iv just gotten funds together finally ! 20k or so . to test my self And really enjoy the sport
I chose the cbr given it's a honda . Easy to ride . Reliability . Only 6000kms and first bike iv owned where every thing is working . Not striped scratched or been messed with relatively new and it's bone stock .+ only $6000 . So instead of buying new this looked like the right way to go .

I've tried to do the track day to race thing bfor but hadn't had the coin . Or tried to acheive greatness on bikes witch were to small ie GSXR 400 track bike , rgv98250, both great bikes . But the GSXR parts were Imposible to find and when a small elec prob cam to I just bout burnt it due to frustration and lack off knowledge . Rgv250 great bike cost only $1000 but blew it up second race craft . I had a zx6rr but it was just to battle scard and had constant problems due to it being well used racer . Bike was super sport spec and I honestly felt scared it was so quick . But handled and stoped like a 1 legged horse .

So now I've just saved every penny! I have a sv1000 fighter as my daily and think it's the best bike I've ever owned for road useability ! Outa the 12 bikes I've owned over 12 years of riding !! made some smart business moves and set aside 20k so I can get fresh rubber when I need it do maintenance properly etc .

After the bike arrived last week with help from John at " jb imports" my initial assessment was " god this thing is slow !!! Given I've been riding daily on a moded 1000cc twin! Witch is prob good cause I ant gana be scared On the track ! Bikes practically new . So must have the same power every other 600 rider has . Just used to the 1000cc torq I guess

Rightio so my questions are !!!! I'm 95kgs
How far do I go mods wise?
What works best for the 05/06 cbr
-Gearing ? Is it the usual 520 -1 +2 or has some 1 got hand on knowledge of what works best
-exhaust ? I have a slip on "atare" + link pipe lil damaged I got of a psbr for $150
    - brakes are great but still I think braided lines are a must
    - what the best fuel module ATM pcv or two bros juice box are The current favs
    - guy said "Dunlop sportmax q2's have been his choice . But I can get mitch 2cts for $380 fitted locally from a mate . witch is cheaper than what I can get the dun lops for and running a set on my sv with excellent results.
    - is it worth upgrading the fork internals given I'm 95kgs bfor the start of this year .
    - does the bike need a damper ?
    - and is a full system really worth the extra $1500 over the $600 slipon
    - goin to get russle speak to dyno it up once I've added all the performance mods .
    - brakes was thinking ebc hh sinterd .
    - gear ind but no atre due to the jerkey ness ???

I'd really like to here from a person who's ran the same bike and what they thought both about the bike it self and the racing compedidness off it among the rest .. I have funds to really go out and trick it out
With what ever I want. but this bike is my race learner and only goin to get Droped so I'm trying to with help find the right balance.

Any who thanks for any help and look fwd to the year ahead !!

    Cheers slip in

What class are you going to race in? even if your just starting off in Club 600, you still need to build your bike to a certain class (Supersport or Superstock). Once you know that, start planning your mods. Otherwise a lot of what you are planning is going to be money down the drain.

If your going to be semi-serious i'd suggest your order of modifications should be
    • Suspension
    • Experience
    • Engine

Before tricking out a bike, get experience actually cornering first, as once you can ride the thing, power will make a bigger difference. Otherwise you just depend on the power to get you around the track, and develop bad habits.

Hi ya slippin I have an 05 CBR 600 as well as an R1The CBR dosent seam to produce any power untill it sounds like the engin is going to grenade in a fit of high revs. After about 9000 the bike wakes up and comes into life.It took me a little while to get used to fealing like a murderer rinning the poor little things neck. But after a while, its kind of satisfying in a Dexter kind of way. They are a great bike in corners IMO.light and stable I dont know if I have been any help, Just dont be afraid rev fuck out of it. You are comeing from a 1000 V twin after all.

Cheers guys . Every bit helps .

If I need to do the suspension . I was thinking
    -ttx ohlins rear .$1200 ish
-ktech springs + this valve kit bout $600 ish + labour

Can any one say what it's worth to get forks rebuilt with parts provided and forks removed ?

Or who here in Perth is the best suspension group or shop to go see .. I know Marty moose is the form fav . But I think his cracked the shits after I organized a follow up after we did my forks and I didn't show up due to one reason or another .

I'll pm him though and hopefully he's forgot . Other wise I'd like the name of a good shop .

    Lot of questions there mate!

Martys great but he pointed me to russ at dynotime when i wanted to change springs etc. I'd do that first

Would be good to hear from a few of the experienced blokes regarding starting off in sstock or ssport?
I plan on doing at least a round, but my decisions are based mainly on $$ vs experience gained
You've got a nice stocker, keep the money for fees, tyres, brakes, fuel, fluids etc.

    That's my opinion anyway

And a lot of the blojes, myself included, are running supercorsas

Edit- i walked away from russ 950 down. Ohlins springs but i already had gold valving in there & he reshimmed the stack to suit my weight. He also gave me a base setting which was bloody close to what it's at now, after doing the sags
That was after he found my fork tubes bent & is including new seals, oils & labour

    READ THE GCR's!!!!!!!

Again, I'll state it for you.... work out what class you are building your bike to....

As a superstock you can't change the rear shock, or run a fuel module such as the PCIII or juice box, or able to fit velocity stacks......

If this bike is going to be a "learning" experience for you, build it to superstock, and spend your budget on getting experience i.e. tyres, and track time. If you are considering racing, don't even practice on the track unless you are using the tyres you intend to race with. That means the two tyres you are currently looking at are not eligible, as they aren't homologated tyres for any racing class in Australia. Why spend time on the track setting up and getting used to a bike if come race day you have to use different tyres?

Once you actually become competitive in the Superstock/Club 600, then you evaluate whether spending 2k in exhaust, fuel module and tuning is actually worth it, or upgrade to a more modern bike that will have the additional power etc already as stock.

    Thanx black fzr that's a result !!

The gcr's are fuckin confusing some times .
A- What tyre would u recommend for the above bike then in super stock ?
    B- what mods are u allowed " surley a slipon" ?
    C- suspension then . What would u go for ? Or what's a good shop ?

I'll go over the gcr again tmoz and post up any bits I have trouble deciphering . I have 20 diff ppl friends telling me 20 diff things !! Lol ..

Tyres make sesnse . Just comes down to what I will be allowed for super stock. .

Was my impression for clubman u could run what ever u like .

My advice - save your hard earned $'s for the stuff that counts!

Tires - choose one of these, they are the 'homologated' tires that are required for supersport and superstock. I recommend the Pirelli's but that is personal preference.
    http://mcrcwa.com.au/images/stories/...sspt_stock.pdf

GCR acceptable mods - Supersport (Section 15.7) or superstock (Section 15.8) - http://www.ma.org.au/fileadmin/user_...oad_Racing.pdf

Suspension - should you decide you need work done then "Dynotime" in Wangara provides a quality service (08) 9409 5633

    .. some sage advice here.

Note: Clubman is fine to ride in to get 'up to speed' but don't base you bike build on its 'free for all' rules.

    Quick Summary from memory:

In all cases add 'Shark Fin' to protect your squiddgy bits from the rear sprocket/chain. Lock wire. Race grade engine covers/protection. Reroute breather hoses. Frequent oil & filter changes (get aftermarket air filter for ease of management).

Superstock: slipon yes, pciii no, braided lines yes, change brake m/c or calipers no, add damper yes, change fork/shocks internals yes (external apperance must be stock), change external gearing yes

    and add to this

Supersport: full system yes, ecu/pcu mods yes, brake m/c can be upgraded, full cartridge forks & replacement shock is allowed

In all cases the GCR's provide the detail as rules change from year to year, get to know it well; time for me to have a fresh read ready to the coming year.

There is also a noise limit for the exhaust which is tested from time to time.

as said again and again, build it for superstock (those supersport guys are too fast!) just do a slip on, gearing and see Russel about your suspention. Do all the other safety stuff, engine case protectors, shark fin, lockwire etc. Run treaded tyres (same as superstock)

Then ride the fuck out of it.

    Kool guys. Thanks smeghead !
I've tried to get on a horse and ride it enough and get into the race scene . But money issues have always stoped me . Now i think I've saved enough . 20k got a safe choice bike 05 CBR600rr all straight . And
I've just moved from freo to mindari !! Now I've just got to manage funds best way I can and avoid major crashes !

What's a good combo with the Perelli sc's ' for say track day use . Is it best for a sc1 up front always and a sc2 for the rear racing and or sc3 rear for track days?

How many days can u expect from a set ? Sc1 + sc2 = days? Track days and usual amount of time allowed on track
Sc1 + sc3 = days? Is the sc3 rear nessesary for 600's or is it meant for the 1000cc to giv a lil longevity ?

Does any 1 know where the best place to get the Perelli tyres are ?

Is their a shop that mcrcwa has a relation ship with that would give a discount ?
Is their an Internet shop that has them cheap ? SBTS still has them at $435 p/s + postage
Is their any inet shop that has these cheaper ? Or eBay store ?

In my limited experiance I'd say the perelli sc series would be the pick of the litter ?

Does the cbr600rr need a steering damper ? The fela doin track days bfor me over east on the bike said no !! But diff track and being race conditions ?

I don’t think I would be too wrong saying the most common setup is the SC1 front and SC2 rear. There are racers who run sub 60 second laps on this brand/compound and the SC’s seem to lose traction in a controllable manner. A direct derivative from these points is that you should find confidence in the tires you have chosen. personally i wouldnt chop and change between race days and trackdays, the longevity will still be shite when you get quick.
How many days can u expect from a set ? Sc1 + sc2 = days? Track days and usual amount of time allowed on track
About 4 days from a front and 2 track days from a rear. This being said some more aggressive racers probably chew through them a lot quicker.
Does any 1 know where the best place to get the Perelli tyres are ?
I get mine through Bike Tyre City in North Perth. Not the cheapest around but the customer service is good.

There are now import problems with the Pirelli’s. Do a search to find out more.

In my limited experiance I'd say the perelli sc series would be the pick of the litter ?
Not necessarily, the winner of the 2011 Supersport championship ran Bridgestone’s. Itsall about what suits you and what you feel comfortable going quick on. All of the tires on the list are very sticky with the right suspension settings and riding techniques.
Does the cbr600rr need a steering damper ? The fela doin track days bfor me over east on the bike said no !! But diff track and being race conditions ?
Why don’t you do a trackday on the bike first and then you can tell us.............

Actually the winner (Christian Casella) ran Pirelli's. The fastest local rider (Mason Coote) ran Bridgestones, and then the majority of the rest of the field were running Pirelli's.

.. also as you get quicker you tend to wear the front more & tear the rear less (more corner entry speed asks more of the front, higher net exit speed means accelerating from higher base which abuses the rear less) .. that said the quicker you go overall the harder the both tyres have to work.
