    Aftermarket Speedo - What's Legal?

I am thinking about using an aftermarket speedo on my vintage supermoto because I am changing the wheel sizes. Something like a Trail Tech Vapor or similar. Does anyone know if there will be any problems getting the bike rego'd with this kind of LCD unit? Anyone been thru the process?
    Thanks...

not a from scratch registration but my DRZ400 supermoto has been through an inspection in Bunbury and had all the confirmation phone calls made to the licencing centres in Perth, as long as the backlighting comes on when starting the engine which mine does or when the headlight is switched on and you have the standard idiot lights in place for indicators and high beam it's legal.

trailtech sell a surround kit for the idiot lights Motorcycle Indicator Dashboards at Trail Tech Home
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

^^^ Yep, got my dirty regoed from scratch (sourced frame and parts separately) and used a trailtech with their dash surround.
Only thing he said was it didnt have a neutral light, the gearbox didnt have a switch, but neither does my 2000 xr400.

Do you want those gauges or are you just putting them on because of the wheel change? If its just because of the wheel change get a speedo drd or healer and that will fix your problems

My old DR400 has the speedo drive via cable from the front wheel. So when I change the wheel from 21 to 17 it will not read correctly...

I had an acewell digital speedo setup- had all the required lights and could get a cable to digital adjuster and you enter the tyres diameter to get the speedo right.

Thanks Timmay, I had seen these before, the ebay add says "The ACE-2853 digital speedometer from S3 Performance is ADR approved and road legal for passenger vehicles and motorcycles in Australia and New Zealand."

I have had Acewell 3701's on 2 of my training bikes for the past 2 years, until today they have never missed a beat. One of them shit itself today but considering what the bikes are used for I think we got a pretty good run out of it(always lots of fingers playing with them for some reason). Only drama with that is it has reset the km's on it somehow so we have no idea exactly how many k's the bike has. I think the bike might be upset because it is 2 years old and getting replaced in about 3 weeks.

Only real problem with them is it can be difficult to see the lights for the indicators, neutral, high beam etc during some parts of the day but we left the OEM stuff connected so it didnt really matter too much.

We have had no problems with any of the licensing centres while using them and the best I have gotten them is an accuracy of about +/- 2km/hr which is far more accurate than a conventional speedo. I will be buying more of them in the future pending on what is on the new bikes and how good they are.

The Koso RX-1N on Pumba blitzed the pits, and I highly recommend it.
