    Can somebody weld my cam?

Yesterday, while putting the top end back on my XR, i overtightened the cam sprocket onto the cam, shattering a few small pieces off it.....

the cam is in VGC, and a secondhand replacement will be over $100 and thats if i can get a good one. Ebay USA has one for around $100ish but im impatient.

im hoping someone can help with welding drilling and tapping the small 10mm bolt hole back for me.

Or maybe a good workshop around perth/welshpool.

    Thanks,

    Nathan

Is the cam cast iron or steel? If its cast iron, its probably history

RFVC'S have a cast core..... I've seen them bronzed with success with a single clean break. If it's broken into small pieces don't risk it.

If it was a one of a kind there are ways to ressurect but it means a bit of careful measurement and machining ie re-locating bolt holes on cam / cam gear ..

However!!! the cost of labour FAR exeeds the cost of your new cam and if you don't get it right re welded repair - a smashed top end could be a tad more expensive than a replacement XR cam dude..

    All the best

How does the cam gear match. Can you re-drill and tap a hole closer to the centre?

    Edit: Mattsta had it covered

As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.

I know I sound like a broken record but seriously get a hotcam- cbf'd looking it up but they are usually CHEAPER than OEM stuff.

There really is no reason not to...
